Clashes were reported on Sunday evening between an armed group affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Iraqi Army forces in the Yezidi populated region of Sinjar.
The Kurdistan Region’s Counter Terrorism Service confirmed the report in a statement and explained that the supporters of the Sinjar Resistance Unit (YBS) had clashed with the Iraqi forces in Sinune area, near Sinjar, where they set a tank on fire.
According to the statement, at least two YBS supporters were injured by the Iraqi forces, following by armed clashes between the PKK-affiliated group and Iraqi army.
Ezdin Shamo, a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official in the area, told BasNews that the PKK had brought a number of locals, the majority of whom were women, to Sinune to protest against the deployment of an Iraqi Army force to the town.
He noted that the clashes has caused panic among the residents in Sinune and other surrounding areas.
Earlier today, the YBS informed all Iraqi government institutions, except the department of police, in Sinjar to evacuate employees and close down the offices with no clear reasons provided.
Speaking to Kurdistan 24, head of Sinjar Municipality, Jamil Sivok, pointed out that the PKK-affiliated fighters had been sent to close down the public office after delivering the letter from the Sinjar Democratic Autonomous Council.
