305 Cases of Violence Recorded in Garmyan

KNNC 4.2.2014 – The divorce rate, violence against women and honor killings are on the rise in the Kurdistan region especially in the past few years. The Directorate of Violence Against Women in Garmyan announced its annual report regarding violence against women in the Garmyan district. Garmyan consists of Kalar, Kufri, Khanaqin cities Northeast of Slemani Province at a distance of 140 Km.

The report includes cases of murder, burning, sexual harassment, threats and physical abuse. It states that 305 cases have been recorded and they are as follows: 6 killed, 5 suicides, 25 cases of burning, and 6 cases of sexual harassment.

“Out of the 6, 5 of them were killed by family members; and out of the 5 females who committed suicide, 4 were married,” Lami‌’a Muhammad, Director of Violence Against Women Directory, declared. “Violence against women has risen in the Garmyan district in comparison to 2012,” she added.

In 2013 in Hawler, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, 81 women were killed under the name of honor killings and other similar issues.
