Syrian Kurdish Leader Sees No Future in Geneva

KDP-S head Abdulhakim Bashar in an interview with Welati sees no future in Geneva talks since arming armed opposition against Assad will lead to more support by Russia and Iran for Assad.

Therefore he says he is in favour of a political solution. Moreover, he does not rule out the possibility that Assad was behind recent unrest in Turkey and violence in Iraq. He suggests that the Kurds are going to form a ‘Kurdish national army’. Moreover, the Kurdish leader is worried about salafists inside of the armed opposition and accuses the YPG of making deals with Jabhat al-Nusra in Ras al-Ain and oil-rich Ramalan (which the PYD denied before). It must be noted that Bashar is the main rival of the PYD and the PYD is critical of his positions and accusations. They claim his statements which accuse PYD of having ties to Assad lead to more tensions between the YPG and the armed Syrian opposition groups. The PYD denies supporting Assad nor making deals with Jahbat al-Nusra and there have been small-scale tensions between the KDP-S and the PYD inside Syria recently.
