King Faisal I in 1932 in a private memo to his close circle of advisors, stated:
“In this regard and with sadness, I have to say that it is my belief there is no Iraqi people inside Iraq. There are only diverse groups with no patriotic sentiments…There are no common grounds between them. They easily accept rumors and are prone to chaos, prepared always to revolt against any government.”
King Faisal understood the crushing constraints facing the new Iraqi state. Since Iraq was established until now, it has moved from one crisis to another and from a chaos to another because the people of Iraq have no loyalty to the state, but they have different agendas. Baghdad is not a common capital nor the main meeting point for the three main Iraqi communities because each community is mirrored more by social and political movement outside rather than within Iraq.
In other words, the loyalty of Iraqi communities is based mostly on sectarian/ethnic factors, and they each believe in a greater homeland for their community that would include neighboring countries. In past decades, there were several attempts by Iraqi Sunnis to embed Iraq into the wider Arab world, so their dream is a greater Arab nation. The Kurds’ dream is a greater Kurdistan, which would include Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, and the Shiite notion is for the creation of a greater Shiite nation with Iran. So the concept of a Shiite nation is in conflict with that of Arab nation and a greater Kurdistan. That might be a main reason behind Iraq’s crises.
The Kurds were frank in asking for a greater autonomy and fought for it, while Shia and Sunnis fought for their own agenda under the fake banner of the Iraqi nationalism!
