WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA) Syria’s Kurdish National Council (KNC) holds a conference in Qamishlo
16 June 2015 – QAMISHLO, Syrian Kurdistan,— A gathering of 260 Kurdish members of Syria’s Kurdish National Council (KNC) affiliate with Iraqi president Massoud Barzani took part in the third conference in the Kurdish main city Qamishlo in Syrian Kurdistan to discuss latest regional developments, according to a Rudaw correspondent.
KNC officials said the conference would highlight the political situation of the Kurdish region of Syria and the council’s role in recent developments. The KNC, founded in Erbil on October 2011 under the supervision of Kurdish President Masoud Barzani, includes 15 small Kurdish political parties. The council seeks autonomy for Syrian Kurds when the ongoing Syrian civil war is over. KDP, led by Barzani, doesn’t recognize Kurdish government in Syrian Kurdistan. Political experts say Massoud Barzani, sees Syrian Kurdistan as potential political competition.
Kurdish residents of Hasaka in Syrian Kurdistan, expressed concerns over the current political differences among the Kurdish parties. “We hope the conference brings the differences into consideration and becomes a chance to have dialogue among the parties,” a Hasaka resident in his mid-40s told Rudaw.
