US return to Iraq restricts Kurds: PUK official

Kurdpress – 1-9-2014 – A leading figure of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) said the US return to Iraq to bomb the militants of the Islamic State (IS) has restricted the Kurds and their power in Iraq.
Also the head of Kurdistan Strategic Research Center, Farid Asasard, told Anadolu news agency that formerly there were many talks and speeches about Kurdistan Region’s independence from Iraq but most of Kurdish officials no longer discuss the issue, adding that the independence claims and threats were due to tensions between Erbil and central government led by former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He went on to say that because of the new situation in Iraq there is no room to talk about independence, reiterating that attacks by the terrorists of the Islamic State has marginalized independence issue. Asasard went on to say that the militants’ attack has changed Erbil’s foreign policy and the Iraqi Kurds are reconsidering their foreign policy and their relation with former unfriendly stated, and the superpowers and regional powers in particular.He concluded that the Kurdish region owes to regional and world powers after their humanitarian and military aids to the autonomous region and the fact restricts Erbil’s power.
