ARA News – 11-9-2014 – Urfa, Turkey – The Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) announced on Wednesday the formation of a joint operation chamber with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the city of Kobane in northern Syria. The newly established chamber of “al-Furat Volcano” was formed to fight militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in areas along the Euphrates River in Syria. According to the YPG’s Media Center, the chamber is aimed to unify all anti-IS battalions and expel the group out of Kobane and Raqqa province in northeastern Syria.

Beside the Kurdish forces of the YPG, the anti-IS military chamber includes the FSA-linked factions of al-Tawhid Brigade, Raqqa Rebels Brigade, the North Sun battalion, Jarablus Brigade, al-Akrad Front, Raqqa Guardians Rebels group and al-Qassas Army. In an its first official statement, the chamber demanded the international community to bear its responsibility in fighting IS and provide the needed support to the chamber in order to eliminate the Islamic State from the Syrian territory.

The joint chamber emphasized its willingness to “liberate” areas surrounding the Kurdish-majority city of Kobane and other areas in Raqqa province from IS extremists. This coalition is deemed the first of its kind between the Syrian opposition-linked Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Kurdish YPG forces (linked to the Democratic Union Party ‘PYD’). Noteworthy, the YPG fighters are coordinating with the Syrian regime forces in the city of Hasakah in northeastern Syria to prevent the advance of IS militants –who are in control over the southern countryside of Hasakah for months.
