Pro-PKK Yazidis ask for creation of Shingal canton

Kurdpress 25-8-2014 – A group of Yazidi people in Europe asked for the establishment of a canton in Shingal, the Iraqi Kurdish city in the north that was attacked by the militants of the Islamic State and a large number of people were massacred.The pro-PKK Yazidi leader backed the party’s help to defend the people of the city that was attacked by the jihadists and asked for making the city and surrounding areas into a canton Ozgur Gundem daily reported.
Osman Ocalan, a former PKK official and brother of the party’s jailed Leader Abdullah Ocalan, told in an interview after Shingal mass killing that the PKK is seeking to establish its fourth canton in Shingal. The PKK established three cantons in Syria Kurdish regions after forces affiliated with President Bashar al-Assad left the regions.
Sheikh Hussein Ulucan, Sheikh Abu Motlu and Omar Adar, three Yazidi chiefs living in Europe told media affiliated with the PKK that the only reason the people of the region were defenseless against the IS attacks was the region did not have an organized local army like the forces in Syria Kurdish region, adding that the establishment of an organized local force will guarantee the future of the region. They sent on to say that the People Defense Units (YPG) and People Defense Forces (HPG), both affiliated with the PKK, have armed and trained people in Shingal to protect the city along with local Yazidi forces.
PKK Foreign Relation Chief Demhat Agid and a Syrian Kurdish official Gharib Hasu told Kurdpress after Shingal occupation that Kurdistan Region forces of Peshmerga fled Shingal and left Yazidi people defenseless against the terrorists.
