On Assad’s recent offensive against the city of Homs

Media Note – Syrian Coalition – Istanbul, Turkey – June 30, 2013

The Syrian National Coalition urges the Syrian people and all Revolutionary Forces to close ranks in the face of Assad’s recent brutal attacks on Homs. Syria is in danger of disintegration as Assad’s forces supported by Iran, Russia and Hezbollah militias launch a fierce offensive on the city of Homs.

The National Coalition calls on battalions of the Free Syrian Army to come to the aid of Homs with all means possible. We also emphasize the need for immediate effective and decisive actions by Friends of Syria including through establishing a no-fly zone and carrying out military strikes against Assad’s basic military bases.

The Russian and Iranian intervention in support of Assad’s regime to squash the Syrian Revolution has become blatantly obvious, and it is not acceptable that the whole world remains silent about it. The international community must have a clear position on that once and for all. The discussions around holding a conference to promote a political solution are meaningless.

The Syrian National Coalition, in consultation with the Chief of Staff, stresses the fact that the recent brutal attacks on Homs will reflect negatively on international efforts aimed at holding the Geneva 2 conference. These attacks threaten any political solution and it means stopping any and efforts related to Geneva 2.

The recent offensive against Homs threatens the unity of Syria and reinforces the notion of establishing a separate satellite state dominated by Iran. Iran’s plans for the region pose a serious threat not only to Syria but to the whole region. We ask for mercy for our martyrs, health for our wounded and freedom for our detainees.

Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.
