US Government documents, detailing the transport of weapons from Eastern Europe, may be a clue to the extent of American support of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. In a detailed new study, Barak Barfi, recently returned from spending time with Kurdish forces in eastern Syria, explores the evolution of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) — the preeminent Kurdish faction in the Syrian conflict — and its relationship to U.S. objectives. Washington has repeatedly articulated its anti-IS policy, including its Iraq component, for which it works in tandem with the central government. But it has found the task much harder in Syria, given the diverse groups operating on the ground and the lack of a state partner. U.S. objectives are further complicated by the PYD’s relationship with the Turkish Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a group that has historically distanced itself from other Kurdish parties in both Iraq and Syria. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Iraq today meeting with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in a show of support. “This is obviously a very critical time here in Iraq,” Kerry said. Abadi is currently caught in a fight between political elites trying to maintain control of the cabinet and a populist movement that supports his shift toward non-partisan technocrats. The country has also been hit hard by declines in oil prices, which have increased Iraq’s fiscal deficit. Iraqi forces, backed by the U.S.-led coalition, are making steady gains against the Islamic State and today reached the city center in Hit, though fighting continues in some neighborhoods. Man kann diese Zensur mit guten Gründen für fragwürdig halten. Der Protest gegen sie, den ein paar Intellektuelle um Edgar Morin formulieren, ist es nicht weniger. Sie verniedlichen den umstrittenen Genfer Ramadan, dessen Vorfahren die „Muslimischen Brüder” begründeten und dessen Bruder die Steinigung von Ehebrecherinnen billigt, als “Theologen und Islamologen”. Mit Ramadans „Doppelzüngigkeit” sei es wie mit den Verschwörungstheorien: Hirngespinste, die man nicht widerlegen kann: „Die Republik hat offensichtlich ein Problem mit dem Islam.”
„Die Salafisten sind im Begriff, den Kulturkampf im französischen Islam zu gewinnen”, stellte Premierminister Manuel Valls gerade fest. Auch den Begriff der „ideologischen Schlacht” verwendete er. Dahinter verbirgt sich eine der regierenden türkischen AKP-Führung und damit dem Erdogan-Staat nahestehende, nationalistisch orientierte Organisation.
