28 Feb 2016 – Ankara (AFP) – Turkey believes the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) is no longer listening to its jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan and there is now no point in allowing him to make public statements, a senior Turkish official said on Friday.Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told foreign reporters that Ocalan, jailed on the Turkish prison island of Imrali, had effectively lost control over its military leadership based on Qandil mountain in northern Iraq. MESOP Syria Daily: Some Regime Attacks, But Ceasefire Generally Holds on 1st Day
February 28 – by Scott Lucas – eaworldview – Syria’s cessation of hostilities generally held on its first day on Saturday, but some regime attacks were reported near Damascus and in the northwest of the country. – The Free Syrian Army said the Syrian military attacked in Latakia Province near the Turkish early Saturday morning. Three rebels were killed, but the assault was repelled. Syrian helicopters dropped barrel bombs in the area and in neighboring Latakia Province, according to pro-regime activists. Jaish al-Nasr, a group affiliated to the Free Syrian Army, claimed Assad forces fired mortars, rockets, and machine guns in Hama Province, as warplanes patrolled overhead. “Compared to the previous days it is nothing, but we consider that they broke the truce,” Mohamed Rasheed, head of the Jaish al-Nasr media office, said. MESOP RESULTS : On its First Day: 14 Breaches in the Ceasefire Agreement in Syria
SNHR issued its first report about the ceasefire agreement in Syria and its respective breaches. The ceasefire which started on 27 February 2016 resulted so far with 14 breaches committed by government forces.
Syrian government forces and its Russian ally took advantage of the ceasefire and escalated its shelling and military operations in several regions in Aleppo. SNHR recorded not less than 3 attacks that were believed to be Russian in the final hours before the ceasefire started in Kabtan Al Jabal and Al Saloum town and Darat Ezza city in Aleppo suburbs. Also, SNHR documented the killing 16 civilians and material damages in medical facilities. On the other hand, government forces continued to shell the cities of Daraya, Zamalka, and Deir Assafier in Damascus suburbs.The report questioned this ceasefire and its outcomes. The Jisr as Shughour team of the Syria Civil Defense reported that at 15:15, 28 Feb 2016, 2 airstrikes (alleged to be Russian), including a cluster munition, targeted civilian homes in Jisr al Shugour, Idlib, killing a pregnant woman and her unborn child. Two of these challenges relate to military manpower and finance. In the realm of the former, this is evident from internal documents showing a month-long general amnesty issued in October 2015 for deserters from the frontlines, as well as unsuccessful mobilization efforts in Aleppo and Deir az-Zor to stop the breaking of the siege of Kweiris airbase and drive out the remnant regime presence respectively. In addition, IS has not been able to capitalize on rebel fighting with YPG-SDF forces in the Azaz area, finding itself distracted with fighting the regime instead. AFP – 28 Feb 2016 – GENEVA,— One eight-year-old was repeatedly sold and raped, while another girl set herself on fire to make herself less attractive to her militant captors.
These are only two of the more than 1,400 horror stories German doctor Jan Ilhan Kizilhan has heard first-hand from Kurdish Yazidi women and girls once enslaved by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (IS) militants in Iraq.“They have been through hell,” he told AFP in an interview in Geneva. Dr Kizilhan heads a project that has brought 1,100 women and girls to Germany to help heal their deep physical and psychological wounds.The project, run by German state Baden-Wurttemberg, first began flying in the traumatised victims from northern Iraq last April, and brought the last group over earlier this month. Iranian Kurdish Opposition Member Assassinated in Norway
OSLO — The Iranian Kurdistan Democratic Party has released a statement announcing the murder of a former commander of the party in his house in Norway.
The commander’s name was Mahmoud Muhmmedi, known as Mahmoud Khas, and was a former Peshmerga commander of the Iranian Kurdistan Democratic Party. On Sunday, Khas was found dead in his house in Norway.The police has started investigating the murder without revealing any initial information at the moment. However, it is not a unique incident faced by Iranian Kurdish opposition members abroad as several other Iranian Kurdish politicians and officials were assassinated across Europe in the past years by unknown killers. www.mesop.de
