Give Russia credit for knowing what it wanted to achieve, mobilizing the resources for it, playing regional politics relatively well, fooling those who wanted to be fooled and ultimately getting others to cave and embrace Russian goals.
In light of what is transpiring about SW Syria arrangements and possible Trump-Putin ‘deal’ over the country, here is a reminder that courting Russia has been the norm since 2012. So Trump may be bad, but his predecessor shouldn’t get away lightly either

Is it too much to ask fellow analysts and journalists working on Syria to avoid using words like ‘reconciliation’ in Syria to describe surrenders and capitulations, or at least qualify the use? Words have intrinsic meaning, not just political one.

Nothing surprising there. Trump wants out of Syria, regardless of the costs and consequences. Hoping that Europeans, Arabs or the Pentagon can get him to rethink means ignoring everything he said and done since Day 1.
