MESOP COMMENTARY : UNDER TEHRAN’S UMBRELLA – NOW SHARIA LAW IN IRAQ

“Ammar Toma, a minister in Baghdad who voted in support of the ban, argued that the constitution already makes it illegal to sell, produce or import alcoholic drinks in Iraq: “The constitution says you cannot approve a law that goes against Islam,” he told AFP, referring to an article stating that “no law that contradicts the established provisions of Islam may be established.” There was no law I am aware of that promoted alcohol in Iraq, however. Rather, there simply existed an absence of any prohibition against alcohol. Article 2 of the Iraqi Constitution also guarantees “…the full religious rights of all individuals to freedom of religious belief and practice,” which one would assume includes secular individuals and Christians (for whom wine plays a part in religious rituals). The Quran itself also says that “There is no compulsion in religion.” Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=79407

MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY LAURA ROZEN : Did Putin give green light to Turkish attack on US-backed Syrian Kurds?

Erdogan offers to help eject Jabhat Fatah al-Sham from Aleppo

23 Oct 2016 – AL MONITOR  – Turkish jets launched a massive assault on People’s Protection Units (YPG) forces in northern Syria on Oct. 20 to prevent the Syrian Kurdish group from taking the strategic town of al-Bab in northwestern Syria. If the YPG, which is linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), seizes al-Bab, there would be a corridor connecting Syrian Kurdish regions east and west of the Euphrates River — something Turkey has vowed not to let happen. MESOP TODAYS RESEARCH : ERDOGAN – OTTOMAN THE GREAT !

Turkey’s New Maps Are Reclaiming the Ottoman Empire – By Nick Danforth – FOREIGN POLICY

23 Oct 2016 – In the past few weeks, a conflict between Ankara and Baghdad over Turkey’s role in the liberation of Mosul has precipitated an alarming burst of Turkish irredentism. On two separate occasions, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the Treaty of Lausanne, which created the borders of modern Turkey, for leaving the country too small. He spoke of the country’s interest in the fate of Turkish minorities living beyond these borders, as well as its historic claims to the Iraqi city of Mosul, near which Turkey has a small military base. And, alongside news of Turkish jets bombing Kurdish forces in Syria and engaging in mock dogfights with Greek planes over the Aegean Sea, Turkey’s pro-government media have shown a newfound interest in a series of imprecise, even crudely drawn, maps of Turkey with new and improved borders. MESOP TODAYS Opinions – Will Hillary Clinton deliver on her promise to ramp up U.S. involvement in Syria?

By Josh Rogin Global Opinions – October 23 Washington Post – Throughout the campaign, Hillary Clinton has pledged to ramp up U.S. action not only to fight the Islamic State, but also to end the Syrian civil war. If she does what she’s promising, the risky effort could engulf the first year of her presidency and test the limits of the United States’ reduced influence in the region. The question is whether she will follow through. Inside the Clinton campaign, the battle over Clinton’s post-election Syria policy has already begun.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=79399

NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY)

MESOP “QUESTIONS & ANSWERS”: IS TURKEY PIVOTING TO CHINA?

By Michael Singh – PolicyWatch 2715 – October 24, 2016 –  As Turkey looks for alternative partners, it is not Russia or Iran but China that offers the most promise, so the United States should shore up its own ties with Ankara in response.U.S.-Turkish relations were strained before the July coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and they have only worsened since. Turkish officials have made the extradition of Fethullah Gulen, who leads the global organization “Hizmet” from his home in Pennsylvania, a test of American commitment to Turkey, while suggesting that the U.S. government itself may have had a hand in the coup. The United States, for its part, has voiced mounting concern about civil liberties in Turkey and Ankara’s viability as an American ally in the coup’s wake. Turkey’s relations with the EU — already marred by Europe’s de facto rejection of Turkey’s accession bid and, more recently, by the Syrian refugee crisis — have suffered as well.
