MESOP TODAYS OPINION : Will road to Moscow lead Ankara to Damascus? / By Hale Gönültaş (AL MONITOR) / ALEXANDER DUGIN !

18 Aug 2016 – Turkey’s diplomatic initiatives to overcome its long-felt isolation internationally and in the Middle East have begun to yield results. After reconciling with Israel and Russia and sending friendly messages to Cairo, Ankara appears to have extended its initiative to Damascus, taking its pulse for a possible reconciliation.

Ismail Hakki Pekin is the one name associated with back channel diplomacy for the Ankara-Damascus file. Pekin, a retired lieutenant general who served as head of intelligence for the chief of the General Staff, is currently deputy chairman of the Homeland Party, which is known to have maintained good relations with the Damascus regime from the outset of the Syrian crisis. Pekin said he assumed a mediation role after an indirect request from the Ankara government. He spoke with Al-Monitor on the feasibility of reconciliation between Ankara and Damascus and also on the recent developments between Ankara and Moscow. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=77192

MESOP TODAYS ESSENTIAL ANALYSIS : Russia & Iran –  Historic Mistrust & Contemporary Partnership

Dmitri Trenin – Article August 18, 2016 – Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, has been with the center since its inception. He also chairs the research council and the Foreign and Security Policy Program

Moscow’s relations with Tehran are currently much more cooperative than competitive, although the two countries’ foreign policy goals don’t always align.Russia’s recent use of an Iranian air base to bomb targets across Syria marks a striking new development in the history of Russian-Iranian relations. Throughout the nineteenth and much of the twentieth centuries, Iran had unsuccessfully resisted Russian designs to control its land and influence its politics. Iran’s 1979 revolution was meant, among other things, to restore the country’s sovereignty against great powers such as the United States and the United Kingdom, and to stand up to the atheist Soviet Union.  Read full text http://www.mesop.de/?p=77198

MESOP TODAY’S POINT OF VIEW – Don’t Forget Putin’s Pal in the White House – Mr. OBAMA

Obama administration policies have done plenty to help a more assertive Russia.

By Sohrab Ahmari – WALL STREET JOURNAL  – Then again, so have President

Obama’s policies over the past eight years. 18 Aug 2016

The Trump campaign’s Putinist rhetoric has the liberal press corps alarmed, and rightly so. It wasn’t Mr. Trump, after all, who in 2014 announced deep cuts to the U.S. strategic arsenal, disabling 56 submarine-based nuclear-launch tubes, converting 30 B-52 bombers to conventional use, and removing 50 missiles from underground silos—all well ahead of the 2018 deadline set by the New Start Treaty with Moscow and without any reassurance that Mr. Putin would reciprocate. That was Mr. Obama. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=77206

MESOP TODAYS FORECAST : THE NEW POLITICS OF IRAQI KURDISTAN

By Mohammed Salih –  Fikra Forum –  August 16, 2016 – Mohammed Salih is a journalist from Iraqi Kurdistan. For more than a decade, he has reported on Kurdish and Iraqi affairs for numerous international media outlets.

Kurdistan has been an island of relative stability and economic progress for nearly two decades, but continuing this success will require putting aside personal elitist rivalries and committing to political deal making and power sharing.A recent agreement between two of Iraqi Kurdistan’s main political parties — the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Movement for Change (Gorran) — is likely to set the stage for Kurdish politics in the years to come. The agreement is also expected to aggravate tensions with the dominant Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) who perceives this new alliance as functioning to undermine them. But if treated with more flexibility by the KDP, the deal could, in the long run, stabilize politics in Iraqi Kurdistan. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=77208

In an interview with Sputnik, he hinted that Turkey would consider military cooperation with Russia.  Cavusoglu says that Ankara has become alarmed at the lack of willingness shown by NATO to cooperate with Turkey, which is a member of the alliance.

Ava Homa Ava Homa – ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Murad Karayilan, the leader and co-founder of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) said Kurdish armed movement in Iran would benefit hostile neighboring countries more than it serves Kurds.
