| Belarusian Opposition Leader to Meet With U.S. Diplomat |
| 24 Aug 220 – 0Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya will meet (RFE/RL) with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun today after protesters staged (Al Jazeera) their largest demonstration yet over Belarus’s disputed presidential election.
Meanwhile, the state-run BelSAT news agency reports that another member of the opposition Coordination Council, attorney Lilia Vlasova, was summoned to the headquarters of the Belarusian Investigative Committee headquarters in Minsk on August 24 for questioning. The Coordination Council says Volha Kovalkova, a top aide of Tsikhanouskaya, and strike organizer Syarhey Dyleuski were detained early on August 24 and accused of attempting to organize an unauthorized protest rally at the Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ). |
