MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : TODAYS UPDATE DEMOCRATIC STRUGGLES IN KURDISTAN – IRAN

Strike of teachers in Iran and actions at universities – 17 Oct 2018

In Iran it is bubbling with many struggles. For months, the women, workers and Kurdish population have been active on the streets. Most recently, the teachers were on strike on 14th and 15th October. The participation in this strike was very high. There were also actions at the universities as well as at the Tehran University. The demands of the strike are among others:
Equal pay for the same work!!!
No to privatisation!!
No to discrimination!!
Release of the arrested teachers and students!!

There are currently dozens of teachers in Iranian prisons because of their political and trade union activities for the rights of teachers, including Mohammad Habibi. He has been a vocational school teacher for 18 years and is a member of the Association for the Rights of Iranian Teachers. He was arrested on 10 May 2018 during a teachers’ protest and subsequently sentenced to ten and a half years imprisonment for ‘endangering national security’. Independent trade unions continue to be banned in Iran.

Videos: At Tehran University, students organised a strike action and called the slogans. The release of students, teachers and political prisoners was demanded, as was the unity of students, teachers, workers and trade unions. Bread, freedom, work, education and liberation are also called as slogans.
