A 2,300-word factsheet on the Syrian activities of Stroytransgaz, the Russian company that has become the symbol of Moscow’s economic influence in Syria.

6 April 2020 – Stroytransgaz, a Russian engineering and construction company, has become a major player in Syria’s economy over the past few years. The firm has greatly expanded its pre-conflict activities and reached into new sectors-most notably phosphates, port management and fertilisers. It has won major contracts in these areas, including at the expense of Iranian competitors, and grown into a major symbol of Russia’s growing economic and political sway in Syria.

While Stroytransgaz is not the only Russian company to capitalise on Moscow’s influence in the country, it has been by far the main beneficiary of the payback Moscow has demanded from Damascus in return for its military and diplomatic support, particularly since the direct Russian military intervention began in September 2015.
