ISIS Claims Responsibility For Deaths Of Christians In Russia

On April 11, 2019, the Islamic State (ISIS) official Telegram channel, Nashir News, cited a “security source” who claimed that an ISIS “security detachment” had set off an explosion on April 8, 2019, in a residential apartment in the city of Kolomna, about 100 km (70 miles) southeast of Moscow. Nashir News reported that the explosion, which killed two Christians and wounded others, was part of the jihadi organization’s international campaign of “Avenging Syria Raids.” The campaign’s first operations, said to be in retaliation for the organization’s loss of the last territory it held in Syria, were reported on April 9, 2019.[1]

Responsibility for the Russian operation was claimed by ISIS Caucasus Province, which ISIS officially recognized in June 2015.[2] The majority of the operations for which the Caucasus Province has taken credit occurred in Chechnya and Daghestan, but it seems that ISIS has begun to attribute all attacks in Russia to the Caucasus Province. In January 2019, ISIS attributed the collapse of a building in Magnitogorsk to the Caucasus Province.[3] To date, there has been no mention of a recent explosion in Kolomna in mainstream media sources.
