SOUTH KURDISTAN (IRAQ) – Barham Salih Warned Maliki of Barzani’s Plan for Independence: Source
BasNews – 21 Oct 2018 – ERBIL — The newly appointed president of Iraq, Barham Salih, previously warned the Shi’ite political leader Nouri al-Maliki of Masoud Barzani’s plan for declaring independence, a source said.
Salih, prior to his election as the Iraqi president on 2 October, met with Nouri al-Maliki, the leader of State of Law Coalition, to inform him of an alleged plan by the Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani to declare independence, a source with knowledge told BasNews, saying that Salih hoped for Maliki’s support upon the report.
Salih had reportedly claimed that Barzani was planning to assign Fuad Hussein in the position of Iraqi president, and then ask him to resign and declare Kurdistan’s independence while delivering a speech at the annual United Nations General Assembly.
The source said Salih had argued that he was reporting Barzani’s plan based on his “sympathy with Iraq’s unity and not gaining support to become the president”.
Salih previously several times was accused of acting against the interests of the people of Kurdistan Region. In 2008, when the Iraqi government moved the army against the Peshmerga for the first time in Saadiya, Jalawla and Qaratappa, the then Prime Minister Maliki said the mobilization was at the request of Salih.
