MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY : What Now for Syria? – Contributions by DAVEED GARTENSTEIN-ROSS – ARON LUND – MICHAEL YOUNG –
By Jamie Dettmer – 19 Sep 2016 – GAZIANTEP, TURKEY (VOA) — The U.S.-Russia negotiated cease-fire in Syria that was negotiated over the heads of militias battling to oust President Bashar al-Assad appears Sunday to be all but dead.Insurgent leaders and observers of the Syrian conflict warn the legacy of the truce will be to add to the increasingly poisonous relations between the rebels and Washington. They argue the consequences of the cease-fire will be to diminish what scant leverage the United States has left with moderate and Islamist rebels, driving them into closer collaboration with militant groups. WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)
MESOP Syria Feature: Will the Ceasefire Hold? / NO ONE IN WINNING POSITION
Writing for The Arab Weekly, Mamoon Alabbasi considers the US-Russian ceasefire for Syria and whether it can be sustained, with analysis from and EA’s Scott Lucas and Chris Doyle of the Council for Arab-British Understanding:
Experts are not certain at this stage whether the US-Russian brokered ceasefire in Syria can hold for a long period of time or if it can pave the way for a potential settlement between the warring parties. The ceasefire…excludes the Islamic State and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front. If the ceasefire holds and aid is delivered to besieged areas, Washington and Moscow plan to coordinate air strikes against ISIS and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=78258
MESOP SYRIA TODAY : Ceasefire? Regime Bombing & Fighting Escalate
19 Sep 2016 – By Scott Lucas – eaworldview – A six-day ceasefire appeared to be collapsing across parts of Syria on Sunday, as President Assad’s air force bombed several areas — including the city of Aleppo for the first time during the truce — and the Syrian military and rebels fought on two fronts.Monday is the day of decision for the US to develop its plan with Russia further, confirming whether it will proceed with a plan for intelligence-sharing on airstrikes against the Islamic State and the jihadists of Jabhat al-Fatah, formerly Jabhat al-Nusra.Washington has said that the Joint Implementation Center is dependent upon a successful ceasefire. MESOP NEWS „WHO WAS INFORMED?“ – US: We Informed Russia in Advance About Attack That Hit Assad Forces
The US military repeated on Sunday that it informed Russia about the attack, countering Moscow’s accusations that the Americans were supporting the Islamic State with the strikes.
Officials said US military personnel in Qatar told the Russians about 30 minutes in advance about the plan to attack an area where several dozen individuals, a tank, and other military gear were present. The Russians said nothing to indicate the presence of regime troops until they called about 20 minutes into the assault, when the operation was immediately aborted. MESOP ANALYSIS : AFTER THE CEASEFIRE – THE ISRAELI POINT OF VIEW – Cautious Pessimism: The Ceasefire in Syria – Prospects for Success
DINSS Insight No. 855, September 19, 2016 – Udi Dekel , Ofir Winter – Although the Syrian regime welcomed the Russian-American ceasefire agreement, President Assad was quick to proclaim his determination to reestablish Syrian state control over all parts of the country that are currently in the hands of “terrorists.” He also demonstrated no willingness to move ahead with regime reform. Yet alongside the clear difficulties threatening the success of the ceasefire agreement, there are significant factors that may enable it. The major issue that should trouble Israel in light of the ceasefire agreement is the situation in southern Syria. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=78284

MESOP TODAYS SPECIAL : Pride & affirmative prejudice – Donald Trump and the Jews Analysis: Does Israel’s existence rely on Trump’s election?
A ‘Jerusalem Post’ special report explores differing perspectives on the Republican presidential nominee’s decades-long relationship with the Jewish community.
19 Sep 2016 – NEW YORK – Near the end of his debt-ridden ownership of the Plaza Hotel, Donald Trump summoned Abe Foxman to breakfast at its iconic Palm Court. The real estate tycoon had a bone to pick with the Anti-Defamation League.Foxman, then ADL’s national director, sat waiting for half an hour at the owner’s usual corner table. Trump finally walked in blustering, hand outstretched. – “Mr. Foxman,” he began, “Trump never apologizes.”
Foxman’s colleague, Art Teitelbaum, had recently criticized Trump for his tactics in Palm Beach – a city long marred by discrimination – battling the city council over turning his estate at Mar-a-Lago into a private social club. Trump was accusing the Florida township of antisemitism, claiming that it was opposed to his efforts because his club was going to welcome members of all races and creeds, including Jews and African-Americans.
