In the late summer of 2011, President Barack Obama declared the reign of Bashar al-Assad “illegitimate” and told him the time had come to “step aside.” In the early fall of 2015, U.S. officials laughingly dismissed Vladimir Putin’s unexpected direct military intervention into Syria as an accident waiting to happen at Russia’s expense.Today, Secretary of State John Kerry formally legitimized Assad’s military by way of delimiting its zone of combat; and he welcomed the Russian Air Force as a prospective U.S. partner prosecuting an increasingly complex and muddled war against the so-called Islamic State and al-Qaeda, two separate and competitive terrorist organizations in Syria. MESOP-LEAKS : Hid Documents Showing Syrian Deposits in Russian Bank / WikiLeaks release excludes evidence of €2 billion transfer from Syria to Russia
WikiLeaks apparently hid documents showing a multi-billion euro transaction between the Syrian regime and a government-owned Russian bank, according to leaked U.S. court documents obtained by the Daily Dot. The email in question reportedly shows more than €2 billion being transferred from the Central Bank of Syria to Russia’s VTB Bank; and court records show the note was obtained by hacktivists who breached the Syrian government’s networks shortly before economic sanctions were imposed on it amid a brutal civil war. That email, along with several million others, were handed over to WikiLeaks, who published them in 2012 as “The Syria Files,” but the correspondence showing that Russia-Syria transaction was notably omitted. WikiLeaks said any such claims about a missing email are “speculation” and “false,” and they allegedly threatened the Daily Dot with retaliation for publishing the account.

WikiLeaks denies withholding any documents it received as part of its ‘Syria Files’ release. The transparency organization, which boasts of a commitment to use “cryptography to protect human rights” against repressive regimes, has faced criticism from supporters of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and praise from Republican opponent Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.The court records, placed under seal by a Manhattan federal court and obtained by the Daily Dot through an anonymous source, show in detail how a group of hacktivists breached the Syrian government’s networks on the eve of the country’s civil war and extracted emails about major bank transactions the Syrian regime was hurriedly making amid a host of economic sanctions. THE AUGUST 16 announcement by the governments of Russia and Iran that Russia had deployed fighter jets at the Iranian airbase in Hamadan (southwest of Tehran) and that sorties were executed against military targets of Islamic State and Jabhat al-Fateh a-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) in Syria is a turning point in developments in the region. – To date, the Iranians have allowed Russia to use their airspace for attacks in Syria as part of the military cooperation between the two states, which has grown tighter since September 2015.
