WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP : A NEAR CLASH BETWEEN US vs. SYRIA JETS NEAR HASSAKEH (ISRAELI DEBKA FILES REPORT) –   US, Russia trade blows in Syria on Kurds’ backs

20 Aug 2016 – DEBKA FILE – The near-clash between US and Syrian warplanes over Kurdish Hassaka in northern Syrian Friday Aug. 19 sprung out of the Obama administration’s decision the day before to try and draw the line on the growing Russian-Iranian-Turkish-Syrian collaboration in the conjoined Syrian-Iraqi arenas, debkafile’s military sources report. It occurred when US jets flew in protective formation over the Kurdish positions, the day after they were attacked by Syrian (some Middle East sources say, Russian) jets.

The US jets came within a mile of the two Syrian Su-24 fighter jets approaching the Kurdish enclave of Hassaka, and warned them off. Without responding the Syrian planes turned tail.

The US Defense Department reported that when the incident began, “coalition forces on the ground” tried reaching the Syrian jets on a “common radio frequency” but received not response. The spokesman did not specify which “coalition forces” he was referring to.

According to some Middle East sources, the Su-24s which attacked Hassaka Thursday were Russian – not Syrian. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=77265

Two floors underground, Aleppo’s luckier orphans sleep as safely as anyone can in a city at war, though they are jolted awake regularly by bombs ripping apart the streets above them.Watching over them are Asmar Halabi and his wife, who knows in intimate, painful detail the damage explosives can do, because she still carries injuries picked up in an airstrike on a school two years ago.The suffering of the Syrian city’s children, who have lived through years of bombing, was thrust back into the headlines this week by a photograph of five-year-old Omran Daqneesh, bereft and bloodied in the back of an ambulance. Today’s article asks whether NATO might find Turkey’s membership burdensome. There is a growing perception in Turkey that NATO has been apathetic in the aftermath of the July 15 coup attempt and hasn’t shown the appropriate concern a member of the alliance deserves.
