MESOP TODAYS OPINION BY MICHAEL J. TOTTEN

Iran Payment Wasn’t Ransom, but it Was Ransom

10 August 2016 – Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that an American plane carrying 400 million dollars in cash landed in Iran at the precise time the Iranian government released four American hostages. Critics claim the 400 million was a ransom payment. The White House and State Department deny it emphatically. They’re right. The 400 million wasn’t a ransom payment, but it was a ransom payment. MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY  ARYE MEKEL  – Turkey, the Refugee Crisis & Brexit: Concerns and Opportunities for Greece

By Ambassador Arye Mekel, August 12, 2016 – Ambassador Arye Mekel, a senior research associate at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, served as Israel’s envoy to Greece from 2010 to 2014.

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 359, August 12, 2016 – EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The unending refugee crisis, the failed Turkish coup and subsequent purge, and Brexit are all causing great apprehension in Athens. But these challenges might present new opportunities. Turkish tensions with the West highlight Greece’s status as the most responsible element in the eastern Mediterranean, which could bolster Greece’s relations with both the EU and the US. And European distraction over Brexit and its own refugee problem is emboldening Greece to take steps that run counter to both the EU and the IMF.   Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=76974

MESOP TODAYS DEBATE : OBAMA’S LYRICS ABOUT SECURITY & DEMOCRACY /  US Analysis: How Obama Gave Up Democracy for “Security”

Robert Pee of the University of Birmingham writes for The Conversation:  Barack Obama, the US President, waxed lyrical about some of his administration’s remarkable foreign policy achievements in his recent speech to the Democratic National Convention. “Through diplomacy, we shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program,” he said. “We opened up a new chapter with the people of Cuba, brought nearly 200 nations together around a climate agreement that could save this planet for our children.”

But while Obama drove home a powerful and personalized message about the appeal of American values, he said next to nothing about his attitude to one of the US’s most established priorities: the often-controversial business of promoting democracy around the world. NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY)

MESOP : THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION –  Will Turkey Cooperate with Tehran Over Syria?

August 13 – Iran is proclaiming a breakthrough in its strategy over the Syrian crisis, moving towards cooperation with Turkey. Tehran and Ankara have been on opposite sides since Syria’s uprising began in March 2011. These included protecting “Syria’s territorial integrity” and ensuring “that the Syrian people should decide their own future”. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=76976

13 Aug 2016 – AL MONITOR  – Although he brought together a million people at an Aug. 7 rally in Istanbul, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan still doesn’t feel safe in his own country. He might feel safer in Russia, although the countries were on the brink of war after Turkey shot down a Russian fighter jet Nov. 24. Fearing an assassination attempt after a July 15 coup attempt, Erdogan’s entourage took a roundabout air route Aug. 9 on its way to visit Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg. Journalist Fikret Bila conveyed the mood on Erdogan’s plane: Security officials crossed Turkey in fear, but were able to relax a little in Russian air space. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=76978

MESOP INSIGHT : Iraqi militia parades in southern Aleppo

By Amir Toumaj & Caleb Weiss | August 12th, 2016 | Admin_@longwarjournal.org |

Video showing Harakat al Nujaba’s “preparation” for the battles in southern Aleppo

Iranian media reported the deployment of elite Iraqi and Lebanese militias in southern Aleppo proper on Monday to bolster the Assad regime’s forces. On that same day, Harakat al Nujaba – an Iraqi Shia militia backed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – released a video brandishing its forces parading in the area.

The video shows hundreds of Nujaba fighters from its “Second Brigade” marching through the countryside of southern Aleppo, where fierce battles have been raging between the Assad regime and its allies and a jihadist-led rebel coalition. In the convoys, at least one Russian-made BTR-80 can be seen, along with Iranian-made Toophan anti-tank missiles, which are copies of the American-made TOW missiles. Several Iranian Safir vehicles are also present in the convoys, along with more traditional technicals, such as armed pickup trucks. Watch all http://www.mesop.de/?p=76984

MESOP „DANK AN BASSAM TIBI“!
