Tuesday, 9 August, 2016 – 14:30 – A draft law of the agreement with Syria on the placement of the Russian Armed Forces aviation group in the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic was submitted by Vladimir Putin to the State Duma . Relevant information is available in the electronic database of the Duma. The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Defense of Russia and Syria in Damascus on August 26, 2015. The text stresses that “the presence of Russian aviation group on the territory of Syria meets the objectives of maintaining peace and stability in the region, holds adefensive nature and is not directed against other states.” Russian presence in Syria has been key to combating US-backed terrorists of ISIS and other groups. www.mesop.de

Still, it is possible to make some educated guesses. – The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has blamed Pennsylvania-based preacher Fethullah Gulen and his followers. The ongoing power struggle between the AKP and the Gulenists renders this account suspicious, although mounting evidence suggests that high-ranking followers of Gulen were intimately involved in the plotting and execution of the coup attempt. By Christopher Kozak (ISW) – 9 August 2016 – Opposition groups lifted the siege of Aleppo City on August 6, dealing a severe setback to efforts by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his allies to force the surrender of the primary stronghold of the opposition in Northern Syria. Jabhat Fatah al-Sham – the successor of al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra – and other groups in the Jaysh al-Fatah Operations Room seized the Ramouseh Artillery College and neighboring Ramouseh Industrial District following several days of heavy clashes with pro-regime forces. These gains opened a one-mile-wide corridor to opposition-held districts of the city, representing the high-water mark of a major opposition counteroffensive that began on July 31 with a stated aim to break the siege after pro-regime forces completed the encirclement of opposition-held districts on July 28. The estimated quarter-million remaining residents of Eastern Aleppo City nonetheless face a continued threat of siege amidst ongoing clashes and heavy aerial bombardment by Russian and Syrian warplanes that have prevented humanitarian groups and civilians from using the newly-established supply route. The move, which had been negotiated for well over a year, was confirmed on July 28. – In the video, Nusra leader Abu Mohammad al-Joulani said the detachment was “in the necessity of the continuity of the jihad of al-Sham [Syria]”. Renamed as Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (the Front for the Conquest of Syria), Nusra will try to bring other rebel factions into a unified body, which al-Joulani says will represent “the masses of the people, liberating their lands, giving victory to their faith, and upholding their testimony of faith”. When that task is done, Turkey may then turn to Gulenist assets abroad. There are many who believe Turkey will target Gulenist activities and assets next door in Iraqi Kurdistan. Yet the large presence of Gulenists there won’t necessarily disrupt relations between Turkey and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
