MESOP LATEST : Turkey Kills 35 Kurds After They Try to Storm Base
(Reuters) 31 July 2016 – Turkey’s army killed 35 Kurdish militants after they attempted to storm a base in the southeastern Hakkari province early on Saturday, military officials said.
The overnight attack came hours after clashes in Hakkari’s Cukurca district between soldiers and militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that left eight soldiers dead, the officials said.The militants attempted to take the base in three different groups, but were spotted by aerial reconnaissance. An air operation was launched, killing 23 of them, the officials said. Four more were then killed in a ground operation, they said. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ongoing military purge is not merely a response to a coup, but an aggressive restructure, rebranding, and reorientation of the Turkish military. Erdogan began to purge the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) after elements of it launched an unsuccessful coup attempt on July 15, 2016. Turkish security forces detained nearly 10,000 service members including 143general officers and admirals in the first week, totaling over 1/3 of the officer corps. Erdogan justified his crackdown on a counterterrorism basis, claiming to remove members of exiled cleric Fetullah Gulen’s movement, which Turkish authorities have designated as the “Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO).” He has also dismissed, and in some cases arrested, tens of thousands of judges, civil society members, and academics, and he closed down dozens of newspapers. The extent of Erdogan’s purge and his use of a counterterrorism justification demonstrate his intent to use the coup attempt as an excuse to transform the Turkish military into a source of personal power and eliminate sources of dissent in Turkey. 31 July 2016 – At first the attempted coup in Turkey aroused much concern in Iran, and it is therefore no coincidence that Tehran was the first to express support for Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a few hours after the events began. The attempted coup in Turkey confronted Iran with the alarming prospect of a violent conflict in a large, important neighboring country; a possible downfall of an Islamic regime, even a Sunni one, was regarded by Tehran as a dangerous precedent. The Iranian regime views the possibility of an internal uprising with growing anxiety, due primarily to consternation over the public protests in Iran in June 2009 against what was popularly perceived as the rigging of the presidential elections. The varied consequences of the unsuccessful coup in Turkey can be added to a long list of changes in the region in recent years that have future ramifications as well. July 31 – MESOP – Turkey’s Government has closed all military schools following the July 15 failed coup attempt.
Invoking the three-month state of emergency declared on July 31, a Government decree shut war academies, military high schools, and high schools for non-commissioned officers. The Gülhane Military Medical Academy and military hospitals have been placed under the Health Ministry. The decree also formally brings the army, navy, and air forces under the Defense Ministry.The Government dismissed another 1,389 soldiers on Saturday, bringing the total since July 15 to more than 3,000. Vor genau zwanzig Jahren verkündete der neu gewählte israelische Premierminister Benjamin Netanyahu dramatisch auf einer gemeinsamen Sitzung des Kongresses.
Wir sind zutiefst dankbar für alles, was wir von den Vereinigten Staaten erhalten haben, für alles, was wir von dieser Kammer erhalten haben, von diesem Gremium. Aber ich glaube, dass es keine größere Anerkennung für Amerikas langjährige Wirtschaftshilfe für Israel gibt, als dass wir in der Lage sind zu sagen: “Wir werden wirtschaftliche Unabhängigkeit erreichen. Wir werden das tun. In den nächsten vier Jahren werden wir den langfristigen Prozess der allmählichen Reduzierung des Levels Ihrer großzügigen Wirtschaftshilfe an Israel beginnen.” Ich bin überzeugt, dass unsere Wirtschaftspolitik die Grundlagen für komplette Eigenständigkeit und große wirtschaftliche Stärke legen wird.
Obwohl Netanyahu rund die Hälfte der Zeit seit dieser Rede im Juli 1996 Premierminister gewesen ist, und die Wirtschaftshilfe 2007 endete, hat sich die US-Militärhilfe an Israel fast verdoppelt und nimmt weiter zu. Tatsächlich hat Netanyahus Büro gerade angekündigt einen Emissär nach Washington zu schicken, um “so schnell wie möglich eine neue Absichtserklärung zwischen den beiden Ländern zu unterschreiben“, um den jährlichen Transfer von $3,8 Milliarden an amerikanischem Geld für die nächsten zehn Jahre zu forcieren.
