US to sell Qatar $12 billion worth of F-15 fighters – DEBKAfile June 15, 2017, 9:51 AM (IDT) – ISRAEL
Amid the continuing blockade of Qatar by its neighbors, the Gulf state on Wednesday signed an agreement with the US to purchase $12 billion worth of F-15QA fighters. A Pentagon spokesman said the deal had been signed during a meeting between Defense Secretary James Mattis and his Qatari counterpart Khalid al-Attiyah. Reports said 36 warplanes are to be provided by Boeing. The agreement came despite the ongoing diplomatic crisis and President Donald Trump’s statement last week that Qatar is a “high-level” sponsor of terrorism. Qatar’s Al Udeid airbase, home to about 10,000 U.S. troops, plays a major role in the US-led campaign against ISIS. www.mesop.de

15 Jun 2017 – The Iraqi forces (ISF) made two advances in the final battle for Mosul. Zinjaliwas declared freed for the second time. The last few days the ISF have been contradicting themselves about whether the neighborhood was liberated or not. Bab al-Sinjar, one of the northern entrances to the Old City was also taken. That has shifted the heavy fighting to Shifaand the Old City district, both of which are along the Tigris River. The ISF are going to attack the latter from multiple directions with the army, police, and Golden Division. Shifa and the Old City are the only two sections of the city still under Islamic State control. The combat is incredibly intense due to the dense layout and the fact that the IS fighters have nowhere to go. The Guardianreported that the Hashd were emptying all the villages in western Ninewa. Ich gebe zu, ich habe nicht alle Texte zum Streit um das Kreuz auf der Kuppel des Humboldt Forums gelesen. Doch es wundert schon, wie nach dem fröhlichen Kirchentag in Berlin, der mehr Freundlichkeit und viele Debatten zum solidarischen Zusammenleben in einem weltoffenen Deutschland und Europa in die Stadt brachte, nun plötzlich das Kreuz wieder ein Zeichen des Bösen, ein Zeichen der Unterdrückung von Ketzern, Hexen, Frauen, Schwulen wird und zum Inbegriff von Militarismus.
Auch die Feuilletonisten der „taz“ zogen ins Gefecht gegen das Kreuz, als stünden wir kurz vor dem deutsch-französischen oder Ersten Weltkrieg oder wenigstens vor dem Verbot gleichgeschlechtlicher Partnerschaften. Noch irrer ist es, wenn Rote und Grüne das Kreuz in einer Stadt ablehnen, die sich gerne als multikulti versteht und ihre Vielfalt feiert, die von ihren Museen und Erinnerungen lebt. Soll jetzt das Kreuz aus dem kulturellen und sichtbaren Stadtgedächtnis gelöscht werden, damit mehr Platz da ist für Minarette, für Fußball, Werbung und Tattoo-Läden?
