WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP NEWS Analysis : The complex battle for control in eastern Syria

Tom Wescott/IRIN & Aron Lund – STOCKHOLM, 30 May 2017  – Freelance journalist and analyst specialising on Syria, and regular IRIN contributor

Ever since a deal was struck in the Kazakh capital of Astana early this month to de-escalate the conflict in western Syria, all eyes have been turning east. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his allies have just launched an operation to “take control of the eastern desert in Syria”. It is not just about driving out the Sunni extremist group known as the Islamic State, but also about preventing other rivals from filling the void.

The Astana agreement is less a driver of this new logic of war, in which all sides seek to position themselves for maximal gain in a fragmented Syria, than a reflection of new realities. Though al-Assad’s opponents remain reluctant to say so in public, they increasingly operate under the assumption that Russian and Iranian support has succeeded in saving his regime in Damascus and the pertinent questions now are: Which areas will he be able to retake – when, how, and from whom? WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP BACKGROUNDER : US GOVERNMENT NOW PAYS MORE THAN 2/3 of all PYD/PKK War expanses – US Steps Up Arms Supply in Southeast

31 May 2017 – MESOP  – Syrian PYD/PKK rebels say the US and its allies have stepped up supplies to them in the southeast, helping them defend against possible attacks by a pro-Assad offensive trying to advance along the vital highway from Iraq through Syria. “There has been an increase in the support,” said Tlass Salameh, head of a Free Syrian Army faction. “There’s no way we can let them open the Baghdad-Damascus highway.”

The declaration raises the question as to whether the US will back the rebels beyond a 55-km (34-mile) exclusion zone around the Tanf base near the Iraq border, whether American special forces train and assist the Free Syrian Army. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=86178

MESOP NEWS TÜRKEY : HAKAN FIDAN WILL NICHT REDEN !  ERDOGAN’S PUTSCH!

Volltext http://www.mesop.de/?p=86186
