MESOP NEWS TODAYS TOP OF THE AGENDA : Iran’s Kurds voice frustrations, hopes heading into election – By Author Fazel Hawramy

AL MONITOR  – 19 May 2017 – On the eve of Iran’s presidential election, a group of poor Iranian Kurds who risk their lives every day to make ends meet on the border with Iraq spoke to Al-Monitor about what matters to them in deciding which candidate they will vote for — or why they plan to boycott the vote. Many hope for closer ties with the West so sanctions will be lifted and the economy will be revived. But while the economy is the main concern, almost all of the men who spoke to Al-Monitor praised the Iranian authorities for maintaining security within the country’s borders at a time when bombings and war bring chaos to neighboring countries.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=85893

MESOP NEWS FORECAST : TRUMP & ISRAEL – NETANYAHU DETERMINED TO MAKE TRUMP’S VISIT A SUCCESS

By David Makovsky – PolicyWatch 2807 – May 19, 2017

The Israeli prime minister has taken pains to accommodate the U.S. president, overlooking some potentially troublesome developments, but many questions remain on how the parties will convert a graceful reception into tangible progress.

On May 22, President Donald Trump will arrive in Israel for the second leg of his overseas trip, following his stay in Saudi Arabia. The Israel stop will include a visit the next morning in Bethlehem, where Trump will meet with Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud Abbas. Whereas in Saudi Arabia the U.S. president will hold a summit with Arab and Muslim leaders aimed at upholding a broad coalition against the Islamic State, other extremists, and Iran, he will, in Israel, be seeking to emphasize his connection with his hosts while tentatively exploring prospects for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.   – WHY THE VISIT MATTERS SO MUCH TO NETANYAHU . MESOP NEWS RECOMMENDATION : A PROSPECT FOR THE FUTURE

If the Fighting Ever Stops: Stabilization, Recovery, and Development in Syria

May 16, 2017 – Written by Anthony H. Cordesman – Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy

There is a natural tendency in war to focus on the fighting and the politics of a ceasefire or peace settlement, and to look at the challenges in creating some form of short-term stabilization. All are critical issues in ending the fighting in Syria. It is a country that is now the scene of a series of four interacting wars and power struggles:     A war against ISIS that is joined to the fight against ISIS in Iraq, which is the focus of U.S.-led military efforts, and is concentrated in the populated areas of Eastern Syria.A struggle for some form of separate identity by Syria’s Kurds in northern Syria that has become tied to Turkey’s fighting against its Kurdish rebels, while the Syrian Kurds have become the key U.S. ally on the ground in the fight against ISIS.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=85875

MESOP SUMMARY & SAMPLER : SOURCES ON IRANIAN ELECTIONS / REUTERS / BBC / WSJ / FINANCIA TIMES / CFR / POLITICO et.al

Incumbent Rouhani Faces Hard-Liner in Iranian Election

Iranians vote on Friday in the country’s first presidential election since striking a 2015 deal with foreign powers to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The contest pits the incumbent, President Hassan Rouhani (BBC), against Ebrahim Raisi, who is viewed as close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (WSJ). Rouhani, considered the “centrist” candidate by Iranian analysts, has campaigned on his record of opening up Iran’s economy following years of isolation prior to the nuclear agreement. Raisi, a hard-liner, has heavily criticized Rouhani’s economic stewardship in the aftermath of the deal. He has also promised more government handouts to low-income Iranians. High voter turnout (Reuters) is expected following long queues Friday morning.  Read full texts : http://www.mesop.de/?p=85882
