MESOP NEWS OPINION: IRAN = THE ENEMY OF ALL THE LEVANT / STARTING DIRECT WAR CONTRA ISRAEL

Iran’s Ambitions in the Levant / Why It’s Building Two Land Corridors to the Mediterranean

By Ehud Yaari – Foreign Affairs – In the words of U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the administration of President Donald Trump is currently “reviewing ways to confront challenges posed by Iran.” This most likely means looking for ways in which to curb Iran’s expansionism in the Middle East. But for any containment plan to be effective, Washington must examine Iran’s newly emerging strategy in the Levant and must understand that although Tehran still hopes to achieve regional hegemony in the long term, its current plan is to focus on obtaining and maintaining a predominant position in Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria. The bloody quagmire involving those three countries offers more opportunities to consolidate power than what would surely be a riskier confrontation in the Gulf, where Iran would have to contend with the United States and its allies. Success in the narrower approach, moreover, could ultimately strengthen Tehran’s hand against Saudi Arabia and those in the Sunni bloc. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=85440

MESOP NEWS TODAYS COMMENTARY BY SEMIH IDIZ (HURRIYET) : TRUMP PLUS PUTIN CONTRA NATI MEMBER TURKEY

Erdoğan raises the stakes in Syria
2 May 2017 – HURRIYET  – Unable to change the course of events in Syria, where he is increasingly up against the U.S. and Russia, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has decided on a high-stake disruptive game aimed at trying to secure Turkey’s interests.
The recent Turkish strike in Syria against the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara says is a Kurdish terrorist organization, provides a clear indication of this. The YPG is supported politically and militarily by both the U.S. and Russia, so there can be no doubt that Erdoğan’s message was targeted at these powers. He went on later to indicate that Turkey would continue with these strikes whenever it feels they are necessary. This is a show of force on Ankara’s part and its long term results remain to be seen. The first results however are in and they are obviously not pleasing for Erdoğan.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=85431

MESOP NEWS  :  ……. ON IRAN’S ORDER ! – Shi’ite Alliance Refused Yezidis’ Quota in IHEC: MP – She says Baghdad marginalizes the Kurdish religious minority

Basnews English – 1 May 2017 – ERBIL— A bill for allocating a quota for the Kurdish religious minority of Yezidis in the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq (IHEC) was rejected by the Iraqi parliament, said a Yezidi MP.

Speaking to BasNews on Monday, Viyan Dakhil said for seven months they had been working on the bill for the one-seat quota of Yezidis and most of the Arab MPs initially backed it. However, during Sunday’s session of parliament, the Shi’ite National Alliance MPs “went back on their word” and rejected the bill, according to Dakhil.

She believes that this decision implies “Baghdad disregards the Yezidis” despite the agonies they suffered, especially at the hands of the Islamic jihadists. www.mesop.de

MESOP NEWS BACKGROUNDER: ERDOGAN’S COMPLICATED WAY TO GO EASTWARDS !

Why Does Turkey Want to Join the Eurasian Union? – By Areg Galstyan – American Thinker – 2017-05-01

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu states that Ankara and Moscow have come to an agreement on the purchase of the Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile defense system. A number of Russian experts close to the Kremlin note that reaching agreement on this issue is a positive step before the upcoming meeting between the presidents Erdogan and Putin in the Russian city of Sochi. This deal symbolizes a new stage in the crisis in relations between Ankara, Washington, and Brussels. Moreover, it is an evidence of strengthening Russian-Turkish relations. However, in order to understand the logic of these processes, it is necessary to analyze the political background and geopolitical configurations  …. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=85435

MESOP NEWS INDEPTH “NEW CRISIS GROUP REPORT” NUSAYBIN

2 May 2017 – Executive Summary
Nusaybin, a political stronghold of the Kurdish movement bordering Syria, is among Turkey’s urban south-eastern districts that saw unprecedented levels of violence in 2016. Particularly in the wake of the failed July coup attempt and in the run-up to the 2017 presidential system referendum, emergency rule conditions resulted in the arrest and/or removal from office of elected representatives of the legal Kurdish political movement. While conflict fatigue can be observed in this town where 30,000 lost their homes, so can a distinct sense that a political solution is not in sight. Ankara’s effort to meet residents’ basic needs and compensate their material losses is notable, but managing the conflict’s social/political fallout and addressing grievances of Kurdish movement supporters will be crucial if that marginalised constituency is not to be left more susceptible to mobilisation by the insurgent Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and drawn toward violence. MESOP NEWS CULTURE : VAN DER BELLEN, KOPFTUCH & Co. – GEGEN DIE ALLGEMEINE ISLAMISIERUNG

Oje, VdB!

… Volltext http://www.mesop.de/?p=85429
