His Turkish opponents opposed the decision and considered it an attempt to strengthen his position in the next election and gain the Syrian vote. This has scared some Syrians because they think this is an indication that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has forsaken their cause and intends to reconcile with the regime in Damascus. 13 July 2016 – By Scott Lucas – eaworldview  The opposition in Aleppo is facing a siege after an advance by pro-Assad forces north of Syria’s largest city. Last week the Syrian militia and foreign militias, covered by intense Russian airstrikes, seized the al-Mallah Farms and moved within 1.5 km of the al-Castello road. They placed heavy artillery on the hills, establishing “fire control” over the route to threaten any rebel or civilian traffic.An official in the opposition-held area of Aleppo, divided since July 2012, said months of basic supplies have been stockpiled although

ISTANBUL — Moving in for the kill, the Syrian regime and its Russian and Iranian backers have taken control of the last supply route into rebel-held Aleppo in a combined air and ground campaign that has left well over 100 dead. – It was a major setback for the Syrian opposition, which has tenaciously held the eastern districts of Syria’s most populous city in the face of a far better armed government. Ever since the beginning of the Syrian war, the EU has voiced criticism of the Syrian government’s brutal reaction to the popular uprising which had begun as a peaceful demonstration against an oppressive regime in early 2011. In May of that same year, the European Council suspended all cooperation with the government of Syria which had been established within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy. Parallel to this, it gradually extended restrictive measures towards Syria from May 2011 onwards.At the same time, the EU has repeatedly declared that it wants to find a political solution to the conflict, for instance in the EU Council conclusions on Syria of October 2015. Its actions in this regard have been channelled mostly through the UN-led International Syria Support Group. Also, the EU and its member states are the largest donor for the international humanitarian response to the crisis: They have mobilised over €5 billion in humanitarian aid as well as stabilisation and development assistance to Syria and its neighbouring states. Auschwitz: Don’t Play Pokémon GO Here

This has to be said? The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum has pleaded with people to stop playing Pokémon GO while visiting the solemn holocaust site. Auschwitz and several other museums, including the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., have had to begin banning the game on-site after users were collecting virtual animated creatures on their phones while visiting the memorials. “So far we have not experienced problems with the players on the site of the Auschwitz Memorial,” Pawel Sawicki, memorial spokesman, emailed The Daily Beast. “We think that allowing such games to be active on the site of Auschwitz Memorial is disrespectful to the memory of the victims of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp on many levels and is absolutely inappropriate. It should not be active at our Memorial but also at other memorials and Holocaust museums. The authentic grounds of the former camp is a place of commemoration of all the people who suffered, were dehumanized and murdered here—Jews, Poles, Roma, Soviet POWs and others… We have already written to the producers and asked them to exclude the site of Auschwitz Memorial and other similar sites from the game.”  www.mesop.de
