MESOP NEWS TODAYS CENTRAL ANALYSIS : The National Security Economics of the Middle East: Comparative Spending, Burden Sharing, and Modernization

By Anthony H. Cordesman and Abdullah Toukan – Center for Strategic and international studies – March 23, 2017

The economics of national security in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have changed dramatically since 2001. Counterterrorism, counterinsurgency, and internal security have emerged as having the same priority as military forces, and the rise of non-state actors, the use of proxies, and the increased use of asymmetric warfare has changed the nature of warfighting as well. Nuclear and missile threats are not new to the region, but they are a rising threat, and one that affects the cost and shape of many of the region’s military forces. IRANIAN TROOPS COOPERATE WITH PKK GUERILLA IN IRAQ/KURDISTAN / ALSO PUTIN INVOLVED

MESOP NEWS ACTUAL Iraq Situation Report:  March 1-20, 2017 – by Emily Anagnostos, Jennifer Cafarella, and Jessa Rose Dury-Agri (ISW)

Regional actors are vying to dominate the post-ISIS security structure and political order in northern Iraq. Turkey and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) are threatening the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) and its affiliates in Sinjar, west of Mosul City. Sinjar is a historic flashpoint for ethnic tensions and at the center of Turkish, Iranian, and Kurdish interests. The KDP seeks to incorporate Sinjar into the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), expanding the KRG’s territorial control. Turkey supports the KDP’s desire to move against the PKK and has threatened to participate in a direct attack. The desire to move against Sinjar could bring Turkey and the KDP into conflict with Iran. Iranian-backed elements of the Popular Mobilization are stationed nearby at Tel Afar and have claimed that the PKK-backed Yazidi militia in Sinjar is part of the Popular Mobilization. Iranian-backed militias could intervene on the side of the PKK in Sinjar if Turkey or the KDP act further, escalating the conflict which could undermine post-ISIS stability in northern Iraq.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=84059

WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP NEWS TODAYS Analysis: Insurgents launch major offensive against Assad regime in Hama province

BY THOMAS JOSCELYN | March 24, 2017 | tjoscelyn@gmail.com | @thomasjoscelyn

Insurgent organizations — including jihadists, Islamists and rebel groups affiliated with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) — launched a large-scale offensive against Bashar al Assad’s regime in Hama province earlier this week. The battle began on Mar. 21, when the insurgents assaulted more than a dozen towns and villages north of the city of Hama.

Hay’at Tahrir al Sham (HTS), al Qaeda’s joint venture in Syria, has produced a stream of content from the offensive. One of the first HTS images posted online showed the group’s leader, a jihadist known as Abu Jaber, rallying his fighters. Sitting to his left was Sheikh Abdullah al Muhaysini, a US-designated terrorist who is a senior HTS sharia official and likely a major figure in al Qaeda’s international network. The photo of Abu Jaber and Muhaysini can be seen at the top of this article.   Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=84062

MESOP TODAYS NEWS : ERDOGAN BLOCKED IN SYRIA

Is Turkey rattled by Russian-Kurdish deal? – By Fehim Tastekin (AL MONITOR)

24 March 2017 – Turkey’s plans to expand its Operation Euphrates Shield in northern Syria and isolate Kurdish forces in the region appear to be backfiring.

After Turkey liberated al-Bab from the Islamic State (IS), it turned toward Manbij, which is controlled by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and its Syrian allies, only to encounter US flags northwest of the town and Russian and Syrian national flags to the southwest. Now a similar scenario is being played out in Afrin.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=84047

Basnews English –  25/03/2017 – 13:50 -INJAR — Fearing Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) forces in the area, the children of Khanasor in Sinjar district are being deprived of school.

Khairi Ziban, Khanasor representative to Sinjar mayoral council, told BasNews on Saturday that a school was opened for the children of Khanasor after the area was liberated by Peshmerga in late 2015. The Evolution of Hamas – What Happens When a Resistance Movement Stops Resisting and Starts Governing?

By Dalia Hatuqa and Gregg Carlstrom – FOREIGN AFFAIRS  – 25 Marc 2017

Ayman Abu Odeh, who lives in Gaza, once had high hopes for Hamas. Like many Palestinians, the 50-year-old voted for the militant group and political party in the historic January 2006 election, out of protest more than ideology: Fatah, the secular faction that had dominated politics in the Palestinian territories for four decades, had become deeply corrupt, and a decade of negotiations with Israel had failed to produce a Palestinian state.   Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=84049
