Eight analysts from the London-based Chatham House — Lina Khatib, Tim Eaton, Haid Haid, Christopher Phillips, Neil Quilliam, Ibrahim Hamidi, Bassma Kodmani, and Lina Sinjab — have issued a 38-page report reviewing the six years of the Syrian conflict and assessing if any productive steps can now be taken by the “West”. www.mesop.de
The Summary: Six years into Syria’s conflict, ‘victory’ for any particular actor is likely to prove a relative term. The regime of President Bashar al-Assad holds the military advantage, but lacks the capacity and resources to recapture and govern the whole of Syria. A post-settlement Syrian state would likely see new elites and warlords wielding power and influence across the country. At the same time, extremist groups are likely to persist and evolve. Why Opposition alWa’er Finally Capitulated to Assad Regime
March 14 2017 By Scott Lucas – eaworldview After almost four years of siege and bombardment, the opposition district of alWa’er in Syria’s 3rd largest city Homs has finally capitulated to the Assad regime. On Monday, the opposition dropped some of its demands — notably over the release of political detainees — and accepted the removal of rebels and their families. The first group of 1,500, including other civilians, will be part of the departure of about 15,000 from the estimated 50,000 people in the area.

On Mar. 11, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sources revealed to Kuwaiti newspaper AlJarida that the IRGC has built weapons factories for Hezbollah in Lebanon and handed them over to the Shiite organization. This comes one week after Iranian Defense Minister Hussein Dehqan declared that Hezbollah “now possesses the capabilities to build and produce any projectile or missile” capable of reaching any location in Israel.
However, it remains unclear how Hezbollah is acquiring the materials and domestically producing the sophisticated components necessary to manufacture advanced weapons such as ballistic and antiship missiles when the Iranians themselves experience difficulty in doing so at home.Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=83650

A trusted Obama aide who once worked for an alleged Iranian regime lobbying group is one of the individuals in charge of Iran policy planning at the State Department under Secretary Rex Tillerson.
Sahar Nowrouzzadeh, the Iran director for former President Obama’s National Security Council (NSC), has burrowed into the government under President Trump. She’s now in charge of Iran and the Persian Gulf region on the policy planning staff at the State Department. To make matters worse, Nowrouzzadeh is a former employee of the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), a non-profit that is accused of being a lobbying group for the Iranian regime. NIAC’s current president, Trita Parsi, has long held close relationships with top officials in the Tehran dictatorship.
