MESOP NEXT “BAN” : Israel Passes Bill to Ban Pro-Boycott Foreigners
Israel’s Knesset approved legislation to forbid granting entry visas or residency rights to foreigners who call for economic, academic, or cultural boycotts of Israel or its West Bank settlements (Haaretz). The bill’s language may be used to bar Palestinians who are temporary residents (Guardian) in Israel while their applications for permanent residency are under review.

Nearly six years of conflict have dramatically altered Syria’s economy. To better understand these changes, SyriaSource interviewed Rashad al-Kattan, a researcher on Syria, about the state of Syria’s economy. His responses give insight into how, even as the Syrian regime is winning on the military front, the long-term economic challenges paint a more complex picture about whether it can stabilize the country, and the difficulties the international community will face when considering reconstruction.

March 07 – By Scott Lucas – eaworldview – The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have handed over territory in northern Syria to the Assad regime, in a deal brokered by Russia. The handover of five villages west of Manbij, in Aleppo Province, is the first transfer in a developing alliance amid a frontline and clashes with a Turkish-rebel offensive. “The handover has taken place,” Sharfan Darwish, the spokesman for the Manbij Military Council, an SDF element, said on Monday. – The SDF-regime alliance has been fostered by both pro-Assad and Turkish-rebel gains against the Islamic State since the start of the year. Posted 2017-03-07 – MIDDLE EAST ONLINE – Turkish security forces on Monday night launched one of their largest “anti-terrorist” operations in recent years in the restive south-east against Kurdish militants, security sources said. Some 7,000 gendarmerie — who look after domestic security — 600 special forces and dozens of tanks and helicopters were used in an operation in Lice in the largest Kurdish-majority province of Diyarbakir, sources said. MESOP NEWS “MUSINGS ON IRAQ” : A SUMMARY – Mosul Campaign Day 138, Mar 6, 2017
| The Iraqi forces (ISF) went back on the offensive after a one day pause. On March 5 there were no operations due to the poor weather. On March 6 the ISF went back to work attacking along two fronts. First, the Federal Police and Rapid Reaction Division continued their push up the Tigris River assaulting the Danadan and Dawas neighborhoods, taking the former. The Golden Division moved up the center of south Mosul into Sumoud, Tal Ruman, Shuhada and Mansour. Danadan, Dawasand Tal Ruman had all been declared freed before. In Tal Ruman, the Islamic State were using civilians as human shields to try to stop the Iraqi advance. U.S. Apachehelicopters as well as the mix of Coalition and Iraqi planes were seen overhead. The ISF are still in the tip of south Mosul pushing into the center, but are making steady progress. As usual, the Islamic State is putting up a stiff defense, but it is only a matter of time before it is broken. Read all |
