MESOP BACKGROUNDER ; ERDOGAN’S VISIT TO THE GULF / RESULTS
President Erdogan Visits Gulf: Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan embarked on a brief tour of the Persian Gulf region. The visit was widely covered by local media outlets, and was seen as a significant development in Turkey’s relationships with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. His visit to Saudi Arabia highlighted security issues generated by the Saudi-Turkish involvement in the Syrian Civil War. The positions of Saudi Arabia and Turkey are “absolutely identical” on Syria, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said last week in Ankara. Bahrain and Turkey signed a memorandum of understanding on arms cooperation, according to state news. A number of other agreements, including visa fee exemptions and education were also signed.
Turkey reportedly also views the new U.S. administration as more sympathetic to its opposition to the Gulenist Movement, according to a Reuters report, and it continues to discuss the extradition of Fethullah Gulen from the United States. Details via http://www.mesop.de/?p=82998

THE NEW YORK TIMES – Ivan Krastev FEB. 20, 2017 – MUNICH — “The European Union is dead, but it does not know this yet,” Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s far-right National Front, proclaimed recently. The mainstream news media was quick to disagree with her, but the question of whether 2017 could be the last year of European unity is on many people’s minds these days. European leaders feel as if they are awaiting the hangman’s noose.
In many corners of Europe, there is a growing anxiety that the populist wave cannot be reversed. The old Continent is torn apart by the bitter divisions brought on by the euro and migration crises. The union is squeezed between revisionist Russia and President Trump’s “America First,” and demoralized by Britain’s shocking vote for Brexit.
Moreover, the coming elections in the Netherlands, France, Germany, the Czech Republic and, most likely, Italy have the potential to bury the postwar European project. While the European economy is recovering, a sense of insecurity is on the rise. A poll by the British poll agency YouGov in January found that 81 percent of the French, 68 percent of Britons and 60 percent of Germans expected a major terrorist attack to take place in their country this year.

22 Febr 2017 – Rebels in northwest Syria say CIA-coordinated military aid has been frozen since last month. Rebel officials said the cut-off came amid clashes with the jihadists of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham. They said that no official explanation was given, although they believed the main objective was to prevent arms and cash being taken by JFS, known as Jabhat al-Nusra until it ended formal allegiance to Al Qa’eda in July 2016.Two US officials said the suspension was because of the JFS attacks. It includes salaries, training, ammunition, and guided anti-tank missiles, some of which was provided by Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.“The reality is that you have changes in the area, and these changes inevitably have repercussions,” said an official with a Free Syria Army faction. The Erdoğan-AKP government is trying to overcome its own political deadlock as well as Turkey’s social and economic crisis by violating the law and attacking the HDP. It has become clear that the Erdoğan-AKP government will not be able to attain the referendum results they expect within the context of this crisis, so they are once again resorting to the same foul methods they’ve used in the past. Am Wochenende hat Trump mit Aussagen über einen angeblichen Vorfall in Schweden für Aufsehen gesorgt. Jetzt gab es im Migrantenviertel Rinkeby tatsächlich Krawalle.
21.02.2017 – FAZ – Nach einer Festnahme in einer U-Bahn-Station sind am späten Montagabend in einem Stockholmer Migrantenviertel Dutzende Jugendliche auf Polizisten losgegangen. Die Beamten wurden mit Steinen beworfen. Ein Polizist habe einen Schuss abgefeuert, der aber niemanden verletzt habe, teilte die Polizei am Dienstag mit.
Bei der Auseinandersetzung im Stadtteil Rinkeby wurden drei Menschen verletzt, darunter ein Polizist. Zehn Autos wurden angezündet und einige Geschäfte geplündert. Ein Ladenbesitzer wurde nach Polizeiangaben bei dem Versuch angegriffen, sein Geschäft zu verteidigen. Nach Mitternacht gelang es der Polizei, wieder Ordnung herzustellen. www.mesop.de
