MESOP Warning Update: Iraq’s Sunni Insurgency Begins as ISIS Loses Ground in Mosul
By Emily Anagnostos – Early indicators suggest that a post-ISIS Sunni insurgency may be forming in Iraq and al Qaeda (AQ) is trying to gain traction within it.
7 Febr 2017 – This essay highlights indicators that post-ISIS insurgencies are forming and that al Qaeda is present in Iraq. ISW forecasted on November 30, 2016 that Iraq will likely face a renewed Sunni insurgency as military operations diminish ISIS’s hold in Mosul. The U.S.-backed Coalition has been focused only on eliminating ISIS, not other insurgent groups or the conditions that grow them. Political conditions therefore permit an insurgency to take root. Iraqi insurgent groups that predated the rise of ISIS remain active, even though ISIS has tried to suppress them. These groups have publicized their intent to revive a resistance movement against the Iraqi state. It is too soon to assess whether these insurgent groups will operate under a national umbrella. 8 Febr. 2017 – According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, six Kurdish civilians were sentenced to death by the Iranian regime due to their membership in a Kurdish party. The Iranian regime accused the Kurdish civilians of being Peshmerga members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP-I). Yet, according to Human Rights Watch, these individuals have no affiliation with any armed groups. The citizens are: Rassoul Azizi, Mohamad Zaher Faramarz, Yaghoub Baakram and two brothers, Jalal and Kamal Masrouri. They were arrested on June, 19 2016. – www.mesop.de

CIA: Self Evaluation of its Failures
Mounir Al-Mawri – AHARQ AL AWSAT – 8 Febr 2017 – Washington – During the final year of the Iranian-Iraqi war, precisely mid-1988, indications surfaced signifying the end of the battles. Yet, a number of CIA analysts continued to present false data that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini would never agree to end the war unconditionally.
Contrary to the experts’ predictions, Tehran announced it would accept a U.N. resolution which called for a ceasefire, embarrassing CIA officials. As a result, the CIA decided to review reports issued during the first half of 1988 to try to figure out what went wrong.
Experts used a research scientific method, which resulted in a research paper on conclusions and an argument that the partial failure was not critical based on the results of the evaluation, which we shed light on here in the fifth and final episode on CIA documents.The document dates back to August 17, 1988 and is composed of 12-pages varying between classified and confidential. - Six Kurdish Politicians Released From Prison in Syria’s Qamishli – ARA News – 2017-02-08 08:20 GMT
- Qamishli, Syria — Six members of the Kurdish National Council (KNC) were released in Syria’s northeastern Qamishli city on Tuesday, after spending months in a prison run by the Asayish forces, the security arm of the PYD-led Self-Administration.
- Media sources affiliated to the Democratic Union Party (PYD) reported that the KNC members were arrested for organizing and participating in “unauthorized activities.”
- On the other hand, the KNC-linked media said that those released were “political prisoners” who have been held by “the PYD’s Asayish” for political reasons.

A six-month investigation shows that the militia, reportedly under the strong influence of Iran and the Assad regime, has evicted Arabs from their homes at gunpoint starting in 2013 and subsequently has blown up, torched, or bulldozed their homes and villages. The Nation interviewed more than 80 Arabs and Syrian Kurdish refugees in the region as well as militia officials, former militia members, former Syrian government officials, political activists, and officials in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The pace of the expulsions picked up dramatically after the United States began joint operations against the Islamic State in Syria in mid-2015, as the Kurdish militia threatened Arabs with airstrikes if they didn’t leave their villages. Syria’s grand mufti, who toured Europe last year and addressed Irish MPs, has been exposed as one of three men who signed execution orders for thousands of political prisoners in a Syrian jail, a human rights investigation has said.According to a report by Amnesty International, Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun was deputised by President Bashar al-Assad to approve the execution of up to 13,000 inmates in Saydnaya prisoner over the last five years. Hassoun, the highest Islamic authority in Syria, addressed the Irish parliament’s foreign affairs committee last year after he was allowed entry into Ireland as part of a religious delegation urging the EU to reduce sanctions imposed on the Syrian government. Ebenfalls im Juli 2016 führte die deutsche Polizei Razzien bei 60 Personen durch, die verdächtigt wurden online “Hassrede” geschrieben zu haben.
- Bundestagspräsidenten Norbert Lammert von Merkels CDU scheint jedoch nichts von dem oben Beschriebenen schient zu reichen; er glaubt, dass das, was Facebook bereits gegen “Hassreden” unternimmt, reicht nicht aus. Lammert findet, es sind mehr Gesetze nötig.
- Die Sicht der deutschen Regierung dazu, was “Hassreden” ist, ist hoch selektiv und erscheint sich auf den Schutz der Politik der Regierung vor legitimer Kritik zu beschränken.
- Als zum Beispiel im Sommer 2014 massiver Antisemitismus durch deutsche Großstädte schwappte, war kein derartiger antirassistischer Eifer seitens der deutschen Regierung festzustellen. Im Gegenteil, es gab Vorfälle davon, dass Behörden Hassreden praktisch unterstützten. Im Juli 2014 ließ die Frankfurter Polizei hauptsächlich muslimische “Protestierende” das Megafon ihres Einsatzwagens nutzen, um auf Arabisch Hetzparolen zu schmettern, einschließlich des wiederholten Skandierens von “Allahu Akbar” und das Juden “Kindermörder” sind.
