The Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria has had a quiet but well-funded lobbying effort in Washington since well before he began murdering his own people. But that influence campaign’s clearest triumph came only this month, when it succeeded in bringing Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) to Damascus and having her parrot Assad’s propaganda on her return.
Gabbard was not the first U.S. elected official to meet Assad. In the early years of Assad’s presidency, several senior U.S. lawmakers publicly traveled to see the young English-speaking optometrist-turned-ruler, in the hope that he might be a reformer, break with Iran and even make peace with Israel. Issues among Iraqi Kurdistan’s parties about oil revenue: Socialist leader
30 Jan 2017 – HEWLÊR-Erbil, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,— Issues between the five major political parties in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region are connected to oil revenue, not the system of governance or serving the public, a political leader said on Sunday.
The Secretary of the Kurdistan Social Democratic Party (HSK), Muhammad Haji Mahmoud, speaking to Voice of America, said the five major Kurdish parties own oil companies in the Kurdistan Region after the eighth cabinet was sworn into effect in June 2014.“The Kurdistan Democratic Party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the Change Movement, the Kurdistan Islamic Union and the Kurdistan Islamic Group established five oil companies,” Mahmoud said. “They are also shareholders of oil. 29 Jan 2017 10:42 AM PST – Iran is now concentrating upon the war in Syria, but from 2014-15 Iraq was its major focus. When the Islamic State swept through Ninewa, Salahaddin, and Kirkuk provinces in the summer of 2014, Tehran was the first to offer assistance to the Iraqi government. Military support was only part of Iran’s program however. It also launched a sophisticated propaganda campaign to promote itself as the savior of Iraq. This was carried out on social media mostly via Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms. At the center of this effort was Iranian Revolutionary Guards Quds Force commander General Qasim Suleimani. He appeared on all the major battlefronts in Iraq again and again on the Internet. The success of this campaign was shown in a survey done of pilgrims to the Shiite shrine in Karbala.
