Israel Deploys New Missile Defense System
Israel has deployed its new Arrow 3 missile defense system, which will extend its defense against incoming ballistic missiles all the way to outer space. As part of the system, Arrow 3 missiles will fly into space, where warheads will detach and subsequently track and strike their targets. The system was U.S.-funded and jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries and Boeing prior to being handed over to the Israeli Air Force.
Israel has previously implemented two defense systems to shoot down incoming missiles. The most well-known, Iron Dome, is a short-range interceptor that has been used to shoot down incoming missiles from the Gaza Strip. A second system, the Arrow 2, is designed to intercept projectiles both high and low within the atmosphere. The Arrow 3 system is meant to protect against incoming nuclear, biological, or chemical missiles that may be launched from Iran or other regional adversaries. Israel is currently developing another system, known as David’s Sling, to shoot down lower-altitude missiles, such as those in the arsenal of Hezbollah. www.mesop.de

The incoming Trump team has a quick shot at averting worse disasters in Syria, with its new Russian gambit.In the week after his inauguration, President Trump will have an unusual opportunity to put his new diplomatic designs to the test in, of all places, Astana, the remote capital of Kazakhstan. If this sounds like a Borat joke, it isn’t. Astana is where Russia is convening a deadly serious new round of Syrian peace talks, to which it ostentatiously invited the incoming administration. The Trump team has not yet publicly responded to this invitation, but it should seize the chance to work with Russia and others on the intractable Syria problem, in a way that long eluded the Obama team. If the Astana conference is too soon for serious input from Washington, a follow-up, unsponsored February 8 meeting in Geneva will provide a perfect second chance. Germany Investigating Possible Spying Activities in Turkish Mosques
By Ruth Bender – Wall Street Journal – Posted 2017-01-18 20:19 GMT – BERLIN — German prosecutors are investigating possible spying activities in the association of Turkish mosques known as Ditib, the federal prosecutor’s office said Wednesday.The investigation is focusing on whether some of Ditib’s Imams handed over information to Turkey about followers of the U.S.-based Turkish imam Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses of masterminding last year’s failed coup.Ditib, Germany’s largest association of mosques, last week said in a local newspaper interview that some of its Imams in the country had handed over information about Mr. Gulen’s followers to the Ankara-based Presidency of Religious Affairs, also referred to as Diyanet, which reports to Turkey’s prime minister’s office. Posted: 18 Jan 2017 07:50 AM PST – The Islamic State is in full collapse in east Mosul with 11 neighborhoods falling on January 17. The Golden Division freed all of them along with the Great Mosque, the Presidential Palace, and the Ninewa Hotel. In the north, the army took the Kindi military base. The entrancesto all five bridges across the Tigris River were secured as well. There was still fighting in the Ghabat area. The mayor of Mosul Hussein al-Hajem saidthere were only 4-7 areas in east Mosul still under IS control. Iraqi officials are always given to exaggeration and have claimed that almost all of the Left Coast side of the city was taken. HEWLÊR-Erbil, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,— Of nearly 25,000 registered companies in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, only around 13,000 of them pay corporate income tax, according to a new report from the Directorate of Taxes and Public Properties in Erbil.General manager of the directorate, Dr. Kamal Tayyib, told Rudaw the systematic tax evasion by mid-sized and small businesses has deprived the government of “billions of dollars” annually.“We had nearly 200 billion dinars [$170 million] of tax collection in 2016 despite the fact that one in two companies basically did not pay any kind of taxes,” said Tayyib, who is confident that the revenues will grow this year.
