Deal or no deal: Will Trump and his team void the Iran nuclear accord?

15 Jan 2017 – Jerusalem Post – Trump’s foreign policy and defense nominations have been hardline on Iran, but once they take the reins, will they really try and void the nuclear accord with Tehran?

President-elect Donald Trump’s past statements and rhetoric indicate that he is a non- interventionist, if not a full-fledged isolationist, making it clear he is against sending American troops to defend and intervene in other countries. In that sense, he sharply deviates from the policy of Republican president George W. Bush, who believed in a strong US and invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. Trump also disapproves of the policy of his predecessor President Barack Obama, a Democrat who, though advocating for “soft power,” ordered targeted killings of terrorists in several countries in the Middle East and Asia. WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

!KNOW BETTER WITH MESOP NEWS!: How Turkey Joined Russia — and Left Saudi Arabia Behind

The New York Times, Emile Hokayem  – 15 Jan 201 –  Assesses how Turkey’s changing strategy has altered the dynamics of the Syrian conflict:

Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, three of the Middle East’s major Sunni powers, once equated their standings in the region with the outcome of the war in Syria. Since the uprising broke out in 2011, they have been stalwart — if often divided — supporters of the rebels in their fight against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

In the last several months, it became clear they were on the losing side. Recent events, including the fall of eastern Aleppo this month, are compelling these countries to adjust their strategies. A cease-fire agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey and announced last week has only made it clearer that in the Middle East, force drives diplomacy. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=82072

MESOP NEWS  INSIGHT : Netanyahu to discuss with Putin closer military coordination /

Analysis: What does Russia really think about Israel’s alleged airstrikes in Syria?

ByYossi Melman – Jerusalem Post –  14 January 2017 22:24  – While Assad has vowed revenge for the alleged Israeli attacks, his patron, Russia, has thus far remained silent.

One cannot ignore or underestimate the warnings of the Syrian Government and its army’s capability to respond to Thursday night’s attack, which Syria attributed to Israel. The spokesperson for the Syrian Army claimed that Israeli planes flying near the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) in northern Israel attacked the Mezzah military airport, located near Damascus, with missiles. The airport is approximately five kilometers from Basher Assad’s presidential palace. Opposition leaders claim that there were more targets in addition to the airport. MESOP NEWS “SYRIA’S LOST MASTERPIECES” – Will The Crac des Chevaliers Survive The Syrian Civil War?

It was built in 1142. But the magnificent Crac de Chevaliers in Syria may not survive the war presently engulfing it.

By Allison McNearney –  01.15.17 6:15 AM ET – High on a hill, almost halfway between Homs, Syria, and the Mediterranean Sea, sits a grand and formidable castle. All imposing turrets and towers, winding parapets, and massive stretches of limestone walls, the Crac des Chevaliers is the stuff of Disney-worthy dreams.  One can only imagine the historical events that this castle has witnessed from that hilltop since the Crusaders began constructing it in 1142 as their latest and greatest fortress. But it is in the most recent of these world-shaking crises—the Syrian Civil War—that the UNESCO World Heritage Site has suffered what may be irreparable damage.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=82078

MESOP NEWS BACKGROUNDER: BARZANI’S & TALABANI’S KURDISTAN PLEITE!?

Volltext http://www.mesop.de/?p=82062
