As for the rebels that the U.S. has backed fitfully for the past three years, he said: “We have no idea who these people are.”
But the president-elect appears to be ill-informed about Assad’s key role in the rise of the so-called Islamic State.

By Fabrice Balanche – WASHINGTON INSTITUTE – 30 Nov 2016 – The Assad regime and Russia seem eager to establish full control of the city before the Trump administration takes office, essentially presenting the new president with a fait accompli on the war’s most notorious front.
Over the past week, the Syrian army and its allies conducted a four-day campaign in which they captured more than 40 percent of the rebel-controlled eastern districts of Aleppo city. This is a major victory that marks the beginning of the end for the rebels there.

The U.S.-led Operation Inherent Resolve has not resolved the political conditions that originally caused Sunni Arabs to mobilize in a non-violent protest movement in 2012-2013. Sunni Arabs in Iraq who are liberated from ISIS’s control will not necessarily be reconciled to the Iraqi Government. The success of anti-ISIS operations in 2016 will open space for other Sunni anti-government actors and armed groups to resurge in ISIS’s absence. December 01 2016 – MESOP – After months of debate, Iran and the other members of OPEC have agreed a deal on oil production and exports.Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said Tehran had succeeded in getting a production cut by OPEC while ensuring that the Islamic Republic is exempt. OPEC will reduce production by about 1.2 million barrels per day to 32.5 million bpd by January. Russia, which is outside the cartel but has been part of the freeze talks, also agreed to slash its output. The agreement, OPEC’s first drop in production since 2008, is in effect for six months.
