MESOP TODAYS ENTRÉE : ERDOGAN’S MAP / By BURAK BEKDİL – So, Istanbul is a Greek city?
3 Nov 2016 – Some observers have lately been advising foreign governments not to worry too much about Turkey’s (President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s) increasingly aggressive irredentist rhetoric because it is largely targeted at domestic consumption rather than addressing the relevant foreign audience. Well, yes and no. – Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=79780

MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY RAND CORPORATION
(The Cipher Brief) – November 2, 2016 – Al Nusra Is Stronger Than Ever – by Colin P. Clarke
Three months after its “split” from al Qaeda, which in reality is simply a feint, Jabhat Fateh al Sham (JFS), formerly known as Jabhat al Nusra, may pose a more significant long-term threat to the West than the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
While the West targets ISIS, JFS is quietly laying the groundwork for al Qaeda’s resurgence by “hunkering down,” rebuilding, and repositioning itself along several fronts. This should come as no surprise — al Qaeda and its affiliates are nothing if not resilient. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=79775

MESOP DETAILED SUMMARY : THE BATTLE FOR MOSUL – 1 – 3 November 2016
By Michael Momayezi, Kevin Cooper, and Staley Smith
The Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) began advancing into Mosul’s eastern and southeastern neighborhoods on November 1-3, marking the first time the ISF has had any presence in the city since ISIS captured it in mid-2014. The Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) stormed Gogjali, Mosul’s easternmost suburb, on November 1 and continued clearing operations on November 2. The CTS then breached Mosul’s eastern city limits, entering al-Karama on November 2 and retaking the neighborhood of Samah on November 3. Units from the 9th Iraqi Army (IA) Division and the 1st Rapid Intervention Division recaptured several villages southeast of Mosul before entering the southeastern neighborhoods of Judaya al-Mufti on November 1 and al-Intasar on November 3. MESOP DEBATTE : ALEXANDER GARCIA DÜTTMANN SEZIERT CAROLIN EMCKE / Vernichtend !
Carolin Emckes Preisrede Eine heimelige Wiedererkennbarkeit
