MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY FINANCIAL TIMES : ISRAELS & ERDOGAN PREFER INTERNATIONAL ISOLATION
Flurry of diplomatic activity marks Turkey foreign policy shift – Sudden rapprochement with Israel and Russia suggests Erdogan adopting a more conciliatory approach
by: Laura Pitel in Istanbul – FINANCIAL TIMES – 28 June 2016 – When Binali Yildirim, Turkey’s new prime minister, recently declared that Ankara wanted to increase its friends and reduce the number of its enemies few observers expected things to unfold as rapidly as they have.In a flurry of announcements, Turkey this week cemented a long-awaited deal to restore diplomatic ties with Israel after a five-year freeze, and offered an olive branch to Moscow with a surprise apology for the downing of a Russian fighter jet over the Syrian border. MESOP : THE ISRAELI INTERPRETATION BY RESSOURCE PERSON GALLIA LINDENSTRAUSS / VERY OPTIMISTIC
Israel-Turkey Normalization: Can Relations Turn Over a New Leaf? – INSS Insight No. 832, June 29, 2016 – Gallia Lindenstrauss
The normalization agreement between Israel and Turkey is a positive and even critical development, given the regional challenges facing both countries, particularly those originating in Syria and the Gaza Strip. While Turkey and Israel may find it difficult to return to close security cooperation, the possibilities for cooperation in the economic field appear more promising. In any event, the achievement of an agreement between Turkey and Israel is only a first step in restoring the trust between the leaders as well as the populations of both countries. Following the signing of the agreement, it is important that the parties deal less with questions of respective concessions and achievements, and more with construction of a positive agenda for cooperation. MESOP TODAS FUNDAMENT AL SPEECH : “JUST ANOTHER 12 YEARS FIGHT?”
HDP MP: Peace process must continue even if it takes 12 years – Interview with Ahmet Yildirim
RUDAW 29 June 2016 – Ahmet Yildrim was the first Member of Parliament to be summoned for questioning by the public prosecutor after the Turkish parliament lifted immunity from MPs of the Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP). Yildrim, 44, believes that the order to appear before the prosecutor is a political act and that he is only answerable to the people who voted for him not the courts. “If our trial ends the conflict then each MP is willing to spend ten years in prison,” he told Rudaw in an interview. Yildirim believes that his HDP parties is still pursing the same policies of peace and end to the conflict but that the Turkish state has reversed to the pre-1990s military era instead. This HDP MP says that if Turkey quits its old phobia of the Kurds, there will be a chance for peace and genuine coexistence between the Kurds and Turks that will make both sides strong in the Middle East. MESOP : PUTIN’S DIMENSION OF DEMOCRACY & A NEW STRATEGY ON SYRIA – Russia’s Political Strategy of a “Proper” Opposition
Looking for a way out of its stalemate in Syria’s conflict, Russia is again promoting a “proper” opposition for political talks. The approach could be part of a revised strategy in which Moscow seeks an accommodation with countries, such as Turkey, who have been long-time backs of the Syrian opposition and rebels. On Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry hosted a delegation from Syria’s Kurdish National Council.Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov declared:The sides exchanged views on the development of the situation in Syria and the tasks of political settlement of the Syrian crisis on the basis of the Geneva communique of June 30, 2012, corresponding resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the International Syria Support Group. MESOP BACKGROUND : THE RUSSIAN CONDITIONS ON ERDOGAN / PUTIN IS NOT MERKEL
If Turkey and Russia mend rift, it will be on Putin’s terms / Russia and Turkey even disagree over whether a letter the Turkish president sent his Russian counterpart is an apology or not.
By Ben Rosen, Staff June 28, 2016 – Christian Science Monitor – Is seven months too late to say sorry? After Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan gave in Monday to Vladimir Putin’s demand that he apologize for the downing of a Russian warplane near the Syrian border in November, with Mr. Erdoğan expressing regret for it in a letter Monday, the Kremlin said the next day that accepting the apology – and lifting economic sanctions – won’t be that easy. ISTANBUL — Suicide bombers wielding AK-47 assault rifles fired at travelers then blew themselves up at Istanbul’s main airport Tuesday night, killing at least 41, and wounding more than 230.The attack, which the government said was probably the work of Islamic State extremists, took place in different locations at Ataturk airport shortly after 9 p.m. local time, suggesting a well-planned operation—similar to the assault on Brussels airport and metro station that left 32 dead in March. EU Kommission will CETA im Alleingang entscheiden
