!KNOW BETTER WITH MESOP! – THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MOSUL CAMPAIGN / A DETAILED SUMMARY

By Emily Anagnostos and the ISW Iraq Team –25 – 28Oct  2016

Operations to retake Mosul have made minimal progress since the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) announced an operational pause on October 25 in order for the five axes approaching Mosul to re-sync before advances into the city limits begin.

The northern and eastern axes are nearing Mosul’s city limits. The northern axis continues to focus on regaining the towns of Batnaya and Tel Kayyaf, north of Mosul, in order to position forces to breach Mosul’s northern city limits. The Peshmerga entered the Christian town of Batnaya on October 25, but are not assessed to be in control of the city. The Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) is poised to breach Mosul’s outskirts from both the east and northeast but called for an operational pause on October 25 in order to wait for the southern axis to advance such that the encirclement of the city is evenly distributed. !KNOW BETTER WITH MESOP!  Lessons from Russia’s Intervention — But Will Anyone Learn Them?

Faysal Itani & Hossam Abouzahr write for the Atlantic Council 29 Oct 2016 :

The US Presidential election fast approaches, bringing the possibility of a change in US policy in Syria, meaning a review of Russia’s goals and achievements there is due. To that end the Atlantic Council’s SyriaSource has compiled a dataset of some 400 Russian actions relating to Syria since 2011, including official statements, military action, and diplomacy. What emerges is that the next US administration will face a Russia problem quite different from the one the current administration had envisioned and portrayed, which bears ill for the prospect of a negotiated settlement for Syria with Russia (or with the regime through Russia) under current circumstances.

Russia is fighting in Syria for at least some of the following reasons: protecting an ally; diverting attention from or increasing its leverage in the Ukrainian peninsula; protecting its access to a naval resupply depot in the Mediterranean; seeking to be taken seriously as a global player; fighting Islamists; and interrupting a perceived Western-led regime change campaign in Europe and the Middle East. All these motives share in common a need to preserve Bashar al-Assad and his regime. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=79569

By Hassan Mneimneh | Scholar – The Middle East Institute | Oct 24, 2016  – This piece was origionally published by RealClear World.

In an ideal world, the ousting of a militant group that has openly committed genocide and engaged in ethnic and religious cleansing ought to be followed by an affirmation of national unity. This sadly is not the case in Iraq’s war-torn Nineveh province. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=79593

MESOP NEWS :NO WINE – NO SMOKE – NO OFFICE – (PRAYERS ONLY)! Will Iran allow the EU to open shop in Tehran?

The European Union Parliament passed a resolution Oct. 25 calling for normalization of relations with Iran — a decision that Tehran cautiously welcomed. In response to the resolution, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said that the EU Parliament seeks “renormalization and expansion of long-term relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He added, “This shows the positive will of the European entity for extending and deepening all-out bilateral relations with Iran.” However, the day after the resolution passed, the chief of the Iranian judiciary’s Human Rights Council, Mohammad Javad Larijani, said, “There are a lot of flaws in the resolution. … The document regards Iran as a market for the sale of European goods.” Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=79582
