MESOP BACKGROUNDER:  THE CHOICE TO AVOID TURKEY

Israel Should Avoid Turkey, Include Cyprus in Gas Export / By Ariel Ben Solomon October 7, 2016  – BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 370

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Israel should rule out building a natural gas pipeline to Islamist Turkey because of the political risk involved. It should instead consider using LNG technology for export through Cyprus. Although this would be expensive, it would be a less risky and more durable option over the long term. This should be in addition to exporting to Jordan and possibly to Egypt.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=78888

MESOP OPINION : THE WHITE WASHING THEIR BLOODY HANDS  – KERRY et.al.

John Kerry Sends Regrets – Obama officials start to wash their hands of the Syrian catastrophe.

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL  –   Oct 2016 – Much of the city of Aleppo lies in ruins after days of airstrikes by Russian and Assad regime forces, and buried in the wreckage is whatever is left of the Obama Administration’s Syria policy. If it’s any consolation to the 275,000 souls trapped in the city, John Kerry has regrets.  That much is clear from a leaked recording of a conversation the Secretary of State had with a group of Syrian civilians engaged in humanitarian work during last month’s U.N. General Assembly. Mr. Kerry complained that “the Russians don’t care about international law, and we do.” He noted that “a lot of Americans don’t believe that we should be fighting and sending young Americans over to die in another country.” Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=78890

MESOP FOCUS : ALEPPO – STARTING POINT OF III. WORLD WAR

Opinion – ‘Surrender and You Can Eat Again’: Aleppo on the Brink – By David Ignatius

  1. Oct 2016 – ASHARQ AL AWSAT – “Catastrophic” is the word several U.S. officials use privately to discuss the latest developments in Syria, in which a savage Russian bombing campaign has brought Aleppo near the point of surrender. Yet even as members of the Obama administration acknowledge the horror, they remain wary of options that might counter the onslaught.

Whatever else U.S. officials say about Syria, they should begin with an admission that we are diminished, as individuals and as a nation, by watching the destruction of a city and its people. Russia may be wading further into a military quagmire, but the United States is deep in a moral one. The stain of Syria won’t leave our national consciousness for many years.U.S. intelligence officials describe a Russian campaign to break the Syrian opposition’s will, much as the United States and its allies did in the incendiary bombing of German and Japanese cities in World War II. Russian weapons now include thermobaric bombs, incendiary munitions, cluster bombs and bunker busters.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=78911

WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

Turkey is reportedly restoring a railway leading into a Kurdish region of northwest Syria that has been out of service since 2012.  NOWMEDIA  – 8 Oct 2016 – BEIRUT – A media outlet affiliated with the ruling Kurdish authorities in northern Syria has raised concerns over recent Turkish military activity across the border from a de-facto autonomous Kurdish region in the northwest of the war-torn country. MESOP INSIDER: RUSSIA IS ALLOWED AN INDEFINET STAY IN SYRIA

Russia Faces Security Council Showdown Saturday Over Syria

By Vladimir Isachenkov and  Philip Issa, – MOSCOW — Oct 7, 2016 – The Associated Press

International diplomatic pressure increased on Moscow on Friday to end the joint Russian-Syrian siege of the city of Aleppo, but Moscow’s U.N. ambassador says he will most likely veto a U.N. !KNOW BETTER WITH MESOP! : ASSAD’S FOREIGN LEGIONS – DETAILED REPORT BY ANNE BARNARD

October 08  –  Anne Barnard writes for The New York Times:

The Syrian civil war, and the intense new ground battle in the divided city of Aleppo, is often seen as a contest between a chaotic array of rebel groups and the Russian-backed government of President Bashar al-Assad. But the reality is that Mr. Assad’s side is increasingly just as fragmented as its opponents, a panoply of forces aligned partly along sectarian lines but with often-competing approaches and interests.  Read all  http://www.mesop.de/?p=78903

MESOP “ISRAELI POINT OF VIEW” – The United States, Syria & Chemical Weapons: An Unfinished Symphony

INSS Insight No. 860, October 6, 2016 – By  Assaf Orion

Despite Syria’s repeated violations of Security Council Resolution 2118, including  use of chemical weapons, and the public and official recognition of these violations, the Obama administration continues to avoid any enforcement or any direct action against the Assad regime, out of policy considerations and the desire to limit US military involvement in the Syrian civil war. This ongoing policy, however, has negative implications for the United States and its ability to wield influence in Syria;; its status vis-à-vis other powers, especially Russia; and the United States’ standing among its allies as a partner that keeps its commitments and does not flinch from using force to do so. As such, the current US administration, and certainly the next one, would do well to examine alternatives to end the Syrian chemical weapons affair, as well as to promote other strategic goals.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=78909

‘Kurds vs Turkey’ in six wars ongoing in Syria, says Kerry
7 October/Hurriyet Daily News –
The Syrian theater is in fact staging six wars between different forces, one of which is between the Syrian Kurds and Turkey, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in a speech delivered at an Oct. 4 meeting organized by the German Marshall Fund in Brussels.
“That presents a Syria with a splintered opposition, filled with different complex forces. Sometimes I say this is a place which may be hosting six different wars all at the same time. Kurds vs. Kurds, Kurds vs. Turkey, Shiite vs. Sunni, people vs. DAESH [the Arabic acronym of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant], people vs. [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Persians, Arabs,” Kerry said, describing the complexity of the Syrian unrest.
