“Not Giving Us Like in Germany”
One migrant was asked why he doesn’t want to stay in Hungary. He replied: “[Hungary is] not giving us like in Germany… a house, money…”
“It’s not 150,000 migrants coming that some want to divide according to quotas, it’s not 500,000, a figure that I heard in Brussels, it’s millions, then tens of millions, because the supply of immigrants is endless.” — Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary.
Only 20 of the 12,000 people who crossed the border during the weekend of September 5-6 applied for asylum in Austria. The rest have already moved on to the more generous Germany.
MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY : The lunatic Erdogan – By Burak Bekdil
Turkish ‘Kristallnacht’ coming soon?
We live in days that can be frightening and amusing at the same time, days when the ruling classes defy any limit in self-ridicule, logic or reason. Columnists are instantly prosecuted for insulting some bigwig (almost always President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan) in columns that do not even mention names (including Mr. Erdoğan’s). – A totally blank column can be prosecuted for “implying that it might have been filled with words of insult against the president.” Or some very important man may jump at a column mentioning “corrupt men, thugs, torturers and rapists” and file a complaint: “Honorable Judge, it’s me who that columnist implied in that article.” The judges may have a hard time in deciding who the real plaintiff should be if there are dozens of bigwigs who claim to be the “corrupt man, thug, torturer and rapist” in the article. That would be fun. Read all: http://www.mesop.de/?p=64467
‘It’s beginning to look like Crimyria’
U.S. officials are expressing growing concern about Russia’s military build-up in Assad-controlled Syria, calling it “unprecedented” – with one telling Fox News it compares in scope to Vladimir Putin’s incursion into Crimea.
“It’s beginning to look like Crimyria,” the official told Fox News.
Two U.S. officials who have reviewed the latest intelligence told Fox News that satellite imagery reveals more flights of massive Russian An-124 “condor” military cargo planes landing in Syria. They are offloading troops, including just under 50 Russian marines, and armored vehicles. Read all: http://www.mesop.de/?p=64475

Syrian Government Loses Control of Second Province / Commentaries by Ressource Persons BBC/ PROJECT SYNDICATE & FOREIGN AFFAIRS
9 Sep 2015 – MESOP – Militants of al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra and other Islamist groups took control (Al Jazeera) of the last Syrian army base in the northwestern Idlib province Wednesday, effectively expelling President Bashar al-Assad’s military from the province after a two-year siege. Idlib is the second of fourteen Syrian provinces to fall (AP) from government control; Raqqa fell to militants of the self-proclaimed Islamic State in January 2014. This comes after renewed diplomatic efforts (Al-Monitor) to find a political solution to the conflict in Syria appear to have stalled. – Read Commentaries & Analysis : http://www.mesop.de/?p=64451
MESOP INSIGHT : BREMMER: Putin is serious about entering Syria — and not to go after ISIS
Business Insider : 10 Sept 2015 – The regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad is weakening, and one of Assad’s primary backers — Russian President Vladimir Putin — is upping the ante.
“Assad has lost significant territory over the past months; Putin is not about to tolerate his ouster,” geopolitical expert Ian Bremmer, the president of Eurasia Group, told Business Insider in an email. The regime has recently lost significant territory to Al Qaeda-led rebels in the north, Islamic State militants in the country’s center, and nationalist rebels in the south. The West, meanwhile, is ramping up air operations against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, as throngs of Syrian refugees flee Assad’s barrel bombs and attempt a daunting trip to Europe. Western actions that bolster rebel forces in the north — where they are fighting the regime in Syria’s largest city, Aleppo, and ISIS in the countryside — and weaken Assad further could contribute to a settlement to end the war. This is where Putin becomes worried. “If the West succeeds in turning the tide of the war. Read more: http://www.mesop.de/?p=64457

Q&A with Michael Knights – Post-War Watch – September 8, 2015
The Iraqi government’s fight against ISIS is less important than how it deals with the impending economic crisis and the complex political and sectarian issues that drive the country’s various militias.
Q: Over the last month Iraq has witnessed widespread popular unrest, sparked by Baghdad’s inability to provide adequate electricity during the hottest summer months. Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi responded by announcing a series of sweeping reforms on 9 August. Yet the country has experienced protests over the systemic inadequacy of service delivery before. How does the current crisis illuminate underlying power dynamics driving Iraqi powerbrokers?
A: Something different is happening this year from what happened during previous summer electricity crises. A fairly substantial-looking raft of reforms has been rolled out, while in the past Iraq emerged from similar summers with no lasting changes in government structure or practices.
