Pro-Assad forces captured at least three east Aleppo districts and continue to make near-hourly gains on Tuesday, reducing rebel control of Syria’s second city by more than 50 percent since Russian and Syrian regime forces launched their campaign three weeks ago to reclaim the provincial capital.
The three-week battle for east Aleppo, the opposition’s largest urban stronghold, has killed hundreds of civilians, sent tens of thousands more fleeing and decimated the city’s medical infrastructure. Kurdish groups in the Middle East are once again occupying global headlines today. While the Western media typically labels them as trustworthy friends in a region rife with enemies and shifting alliances, many regional actors see the Kurds as problematic, and contributors to the Middle East’s chaos. For the U.S. led coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS), the Kurds are considered the most reliable and effective “boots on the ground” in the battle; yet, Kurdish ambitions for state-building and autonomy are a source of vexation for Turkey and other states in the region. The Turkish leadership is now bent on curbing the Kurds’ territorial ambitions, which undermines the cohesion of the international coalition. Eine Gruppe von Schriftstellern ruft für Mittwoch in Berlin zu einem Protest vor der russischen Botschaft auf. Hier dokumentieren wir den Appell für ein Ende der Bombardierung der syrischen Stadt Aleppo.
“Die Vernichtung der Stadt Aleppo und ihrer Einwohner gehört zu den furchtbarsten Verbrechen, die seit Jahren unter unseren Augen begangen werden. Man muss keineswegs untaugliche Begriffe wie Holocaust oder Genozid bemühen, um die Ungeheuerlichkeit und den Skandal dieses Verbrechens zu benennen. Die Welt schaut zu, wie die zweitgrößte Stadt Syriens eingeebnet wird, wie ihre Schulen und Krankenhäuser mit finaler Entschlossenheit dem Erdboden gleichgemacht werden.
