8.6.2014 – Anadolu Agency / MESOP – France steps up efforts to stop its citizens waging war against Syria’s embattled president. Six people have reportedly been arrested in France on suspicion of attempting to recruit French youths for the war in Syria.
The BFMTV news channel reported on Saturday that the suspects, aged between 18 and 30, were accused of “brainwashing” young people via the internet into fighting in Syria against Bashar al-Assad.
As part of efforts to stop its citizens waging “jihad” in Syria, the French Interior Ministry had launched a telephone hotline on 29 April for families to alert security officials if their children began to “show signs of Islamic radicalism”. An estimated 500 French citizens are believed to have volunteered to fight in Syria in the ranks of rebel forces, according to France’s Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.
