MESOP SOUTH KURDISTAN : PUK‌’s candidate closes assassinated Kurdish journalist Kawa Garmiyani’s case

April 13, 2014 – knnc.net – KALAR, Kurdistan region ‘Iraq’,— The Kurdish Anti-corruption journalist Kawa Garmiyani‌’s brother, Karwan Ahmad, says one of the judges who closed one of Kawa‌’s case in the court is running as the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan‌’s (PUK) candidate for the Iraqi Parliamentary Election, to be held on April 30.

Before he was killed, Kawa Garmiyani filed a complaint in the court against Mahmud Sangawi, who threatened Kawa in a phone call and is the main suspect in the murder case; but his case was closed by Jasm Kakay. Kakay closed Kawa‌’s compliant against Sangawi two months before Kawa was killed justifying that Kawa was not present.In a statement to Kurdsih Hawlati newspaper, Karwan refutes Kakay‌’s claim and says that Kawa was in the court on the day of trial.

Kakay says that Kawa was his friend and that he did not attend the trial and that was the reason he closed the case. Kawa Ahmed Garmyani, born in 1982, was known as a Kurdish anti-corruption journalist who was investigating the corruption of high-ranking officials in Kalar, was the editor-in-chief of Rayal magazine and a correspondent for Awene newspaper, he was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on December 5, 2013 in Kalar town, in Slêmanî province.

Kurdistan Region president, Massoud Barzani vowed on to punish the killers of Kawa Garmiyani pointing out that he was an innocent person and his assassination was “a big and brutal crime “. Barzani received on March 17 in Salahaddin resort in Erbil, the family of the killed journalist Kawa Garmiyani and his parents. Hundreds of people protested in the past months in Erbil and Slêmanî city against the assassination of Kawa Germyani and other journalists killed in Kurdistan region. The demonstrators call on the Kurdish government to bring the perpetrators and murderers to justice.
