Kurdish Leader: US-Kurdish Cooperation in Syria Will End After ISIS / “The Kurds and US only have a tactical approach to the matter”, Selahattin Demirtas

Basnews – 28 June 2015 – ANKARA – Selahattin Demirtas, co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in an interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit said that the Kurdish-U.S. cooperation against the Islamic state will end after the Islamic State militant group is defeated.

“I think, that the Kurds and US only have a tactical approach to the matter. The Kurds also must use the diplomatic and international relations for their interests, otherwise, they would be foolish. They now fight together against the IS, but there is no common future plan,” he told Die Zeit. “After all the problems are solved, in my opinion, there will be ideological discussions and conflicts,” he said. “In the end, the Kurdish movement, is an anti-imperialist movement,” he said about Turkey’s HDP, and the Syrian Kurdish party, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), who are affiliated to the Kurdish movement of the leftist Kurdistan Workers Party.

The Marxist and anti-imperialist stance of Demirtas was also shown when he praised a Shiite militia that fights in Syria for the survival of the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. On 12 June, in an interview with the pro-Hezbollah channel Al Manar, the Kurdish leader praised the anti-imperialist struggle of the Iranian proxy group Hezbollah. In a reaction from the State Department, US State Department Spokesperson John Kirby said that the US would only support the Kurds with airstrikes. “The degree to which we’re cooperating with those Kurdish fighters in northern Syria has been limited principally to airstrikes, and we continue to conduct airstrikes in Syria against ISIL positions. And I think that those strikes will continue, and that’s basically, in essence – that’s where that cooperation stays,” he said in a press conference last Friday.
