 SOUTH KURDISTAN (IRAQ) – Referendum on Iraqi Kurdistan independence paves way for regional war: Iranian official

18 Sept 2016 – kurdpress.ir – TEHRAN,— Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Jaber Ansari warned that the possible referendum of Kurdistan Region to quit Iraq will led into instability and war in the region as Iraq and Syria could be divided due to the region’s independence.According to Kurdistan 24 Jaber Ansari told a press conference in Moscow that holding the referendum could destabilize the Middle East. As far as we know there will not be such a referendum in the upcoming months and remarks on the issue are made by some Kurdish politicians and there are contradictions in the remarks.

To solve Kurdish issue, first the rights of Kurds in their countries, including Iraq and Syria, should be preserved and then the integrity and unity of the states should be preserved, Jaber Ansari added.He further warned that the division of Iraq and Syria would divide more countries in the region, a situation that would fuel ethnic tensions and make wars among nations.

Massoud Barzani has called for a referendum on Kurdish independence this year as the region is locked in territorial and financial disputes with Iraq’s central government. Analysts and some Kurdish politicians accuse Barzani and his KDP party of using the self-determination issue as means to stay in power and monopoly it. Massoud Barzani’s term as President of the Kurdistan Region ended on August 20, 2015, but refused to step down and remains unofficially in office.

Kurdish leading figure, Dr. Mahmoud Othman said last June that “The Kurdish parties do not agree on the ideas proposed by Barzani about the referendum on the independence of Kurdistan from Iraq,” Othman said “the other Kurdish parties are not responsive with Barzani, on the grounds that the parties see that there is no suitable ground for putting this matter at the moment.” www.mesop.de
