MESOP RECOMMENDATION : Diminishing Press Freedom in Turkey / THE RETHINK INSTITUTE

In the last couple of years, criticism of the government in the media has become a risky business in Turkey. Hundreds of journalists critical of the government, including some prominent ones, have been dismissed. Enormous tax evasion fines have been levied against the ones that dare to remain critical, and their offices have been raided. Turkey shocked the world briefly by banning Twitter and YouTube.This paper provides insights into the extent and changing nature of government infringement on press freedom over the last few years and explains mechanisms by which the AKP government controls the media in Turkey.
